Staff Picks for Fight to Watch

Corey’s Pick: Shane Mosley vs. Andre Berto
Jan 30 on HBO

There’s no doubt about the most important fight in January: the welterweight unification title match between WBA Champion Shane Mosley and WBC Champion Andre Berto. Can Mosley, who’s been off for an entire year, turn back the undefeated Berto, who sees this as his opportunity to break into stardom? The bout also holds major implications for the sport as the winner, especially if it’s Mosley, is almost guaranteed a fight with the winner of Pacquiao-Mayweather.

Trent’s Pick: Juan Manuel Lopez vs. Steven Luevano
Jan 23 on HBO

Mosley-Berto is more important, but I truly believe the better fight will be on Jan 23. My biggest problem was selecting which of the two as the best for the month. Juan Manuel Lopez does not have bad fights so his bout with Luevano gets the nod. Lopez and Gamboa both have a lot to prove, as good performances from both likely sets up a Puerto Rican superfight between the two. I don’t care who is fighting that month, Lopez-Gamboa will be my pick.
