5150 Combat’s New Year’s Revolution: An Event That Swings For The Fences

Columns

The calm plains of Tulsa, Oklahoma, are about to erupt into a mixed martial arts inferno Saturday night, as 5150 Combat and Xtreme Fighting League are putting on an event stacked with high-profile and elite mixed martial artists.

At the New Year’s Revolution card, the promotion is going all in, showcasing more than 20 fights, multiple title bouts, and plenty of star power.

However, possibly the biggest name in attendance will not be competing in the cage.  Ultimate Fighter winner and MMA superstar Forrest Griffin will be on hand as a special guest.  A perennial fan favorite, Griffin is sure to bring a unique flavor to the overall atmosphere.

Having mixed martial arts celebrities cage side is a great addition to any card, but it’s what happens in the cage that truly moves fight fans.  With that in mind, it is very exciting to read the lineup they have in store.

Many fighters who have fought at the highest levels of the sport will be competing Saturday.  The big league roster coming together in Tulsa this weekend is nothing short of astonishing.

Astonishing is no exaggeration when one considers the base ticket price of $20.  The reason for the value will surely be made apparent when the competitors get to doing what it is they do.

Many fans have paid considerably more for events that showcased many of the fighters being locked in a cage this weekend at the Spirit Bank Event Center in Tulsa.

The always entertaining UFC veteran Rich Clementi (34-15-1) will square off with local fighter Mike Budnik (8-3).  Clementi is a game fighter and always puts up a stellar performance.

Budnik is no stranger to elite competition.  He has paid his dues in the WEC, where the competition is truly every bit as rigid as the UFC.  This is a great matchup.

For those roaming the heavyweight landscape and looking to compete in this sport, there are few names that will resonate in the fear sensors like that of Jeff “The Snowman” Monson (31-9).

For those that don’t know, Monson is a veteran of multiple aspects of this sport, including various grappling titles and even a shot at the UFC heavyweight title at one point.

Monson is a vicious submission specialist who is built like a Sherman tank.  Since 2003, he has lost only four times: to Tim Sylvia, Josh Barnett, and Pedro Rizzo twice.  To offset his losses, Monson tipped the scales with 25 wins.

This guy can change the landscape of any heavyweight division.  But before he makes his mark on that division for 5150/XFL, he will have to solve the dangerous John Brown (8-1).  He may have his hands full with “The Snowman”, a man who leaves a long career of victory in his wake.

Another competitor that must be mentioned is a classic fighter for this sport.  If there is one guy that exemplifies the true roots of being a mixed martial artist, it is UFC and MMA veteran Jeremy Horn (83-19-5).

Always a soldier, dedicated to the fight, and forever searching the next challenge, Horn has a fight record that includes more than 100 fights.  He has been in the cage or ring all over this sport and all over this planet.  He has been to war with legends.
While there are a couple more sexy names surrounding this event, Horn’s addition truly is an outstanding addition to any card.  He brings with him an unmatched level of experience within this sport that carries with it an undeniable history.

Having fought such superstars as Chuck Lidell, Randy Couture, and Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira, Horn is cut of a different cloth.  His experience alone raises the bar.

That is to take nothing from away from his opponent, the also well seasoned and dangerous Victor Moreno (27-14).  It is only to pay respect to a fighter who has lived his adult life committed to this great sport.

These two will surely give the fans their money’s worth considering they are squaring off for the 185-pound title.

Another brutally intimidating and explosively dangerous fighter to compete this weekend is Houston Alexander (9-5).  While Alexander has had his peaks and valleys on the biggest stage in the sport, true fight fans know one thing about this fighter: He comes to bring the pain with a furious aggression.

Fight fans can appreciate a warrior like Alexander; he fights for them with a fearless style.  Alexander is a rare breed of fighter: win, lose, or draw.

Alexander will be competing for the heavyweight title when he squares off with Joey Beltran (9-3).  These two look to figure it all out with regard to who will reign supreme atop the heavyweight peak.

These guys have stacked this card so thick there just is not enough room in one write-up to cover them all.  Suffice it to say other elite fighters competing Saturday include Jason Lambert and Tim Boetch in separate matches.

A fight fan couldn’t spend a better twenty bucks than they could showing up in Tulsa this weekend.  These guys have brought together some of the very best in the business.

Do yourself a favor: If you’re in the area, come out and support these guys. This is high- quality MMA in your neighborhood.  Support this promotion, these fighters, and in doing so, support this sport.
