AFC Championship Game Preview: New York Jets vs. Indianapolis Colts Roundtable

The cinderella Jets take on Manning and the Colts in a rematch of their week 17 game which the Jets won (with many Colt starters on the bench).

Chad Jorgenson – The Jets and the Ravens are a lot alike. They both want to run the ball and play defense and they both have young QBs. The one difference is that the Jets have playmakers on the outside on offense. The Jets can throw the ball if they absolutely have to, but they really don’t want to. With the Ravens, if you cover Mason and don’t make mistakes on offense you’re in a pretty good position. This is going to be a close game because the Jets are going to chew on the clock and try to keep Manning on the sideline. When Manning gets on the field they are either going to have to commit to the run and pound out a win, or Manning is going to have to rely on Collie, Garcon, and Clark because Reggie Wayne is going to get stuck on Revis island. And that is a place where no football goes. I really expect a good game here with the J-E-T-S JETSJETSJETS pulling it out in the end.

Trent Scott – If, by some miracle of miracles, the Jets win this game, the Indy faithful will probably riot in the streets for giving the team in the most remote of chances to get into the playoffs. Of course, Manning may feel less generous than he did against Baltimore (seeing as it’s basically the exact same team in a different colored uniform) and whip them by the thirty he should have this past weekend. Also, I predict that Darrell Reevis will not be the same lockdown corner he has been in so many contests. Yes, he “held” Wayne to three catches for 33 yards in the first meeting, but, then again, that was two and a half quarters and that also leaves out the fact that Wayne missed two catches that would have put the yardage somewhere closer to 90 yards.

Travis Gehling – The more I look at this game, the more I like the Jets. I may be going against the grain on this one, but I feel like Defense wins out. My prediction: Jets 17, Colts 14.

Russ Blatt – Everyone knows the ability of the Colts offense and of Payton Manning. We also know of the Jets great run Defense and their cornerback Revis. I think that the Jets will need to keep the Colts to under 20 points to win this game. No one can really stop the passing game of the Colts. However, I feel that if the Jets can stop the Colts running game completely and make the Colts and pureoply one dimensional team, I think the Jets will have the chance to win this game. The Jets offense, the running game, can be strong enough to hold on to the ball and keep Manning on the sidelines. So, I will go against the grain and call for a 21-17 victory for the Jets. Stop laughing!

Alex Schuhart – Let’s go Colts.

Danny Cox – If the Jets play like they did against the Chargers then my prediction could end up a lot closer or even reversed. Peyton Manning are going to have to come out firing and get a lead on this team because those rookies clad in green and white are going to be ready to fight. No-one expected the Jets to walk into San Diego and take care of the hottest team in football. I know I didn’t. So right now the Colts better be prepared for the fight of their lives if they want to get back to the big game. Mark Sanchez is trying to climb out of Broadway Joe’s shadow and a win here could do just that, but I think Indy will get it if they play like they know they can. Please don’t think my prediction won’t change a few times this week before Sunday comes around, but I’m trying to keep it close and stop my head from double thinking. After watching both AFC games this weekend though, it just looked like the Jets honestly want it more then the Colts do. Both teams are very talented and have all the weapons on both sides of the ball to go all the way. Now it will be about execution and who has the biggest heart when it’s time to hit the field. Prediction: Colts 24 – NY Jets 20

Tom Daniels – AFC: New York Jets +7.5 at Indianapolis Colts — The Colts have had to listen to a lot of crap about how they forfeited the Jets in to the playoffs. The Jets have had to listen about how they don’t deserve their spot in the playoffs. It’s very rare teams get a second chance to do things right. Here’s the weird thing: the Jets match up better with the Colts then they’re being credited for. Revis shuts down half the field. That leaves Peyton Manning only half the field to work with, which changes coverage. Then, the Jets proved in the 3rd quarter of the Chargers game that they can get to the quarterback. Combine all that with the Colts still somewhat questionable run defense, a pretty simple Jets’ offense, a Jets’ team that wants to prove they deserve to be there, and karmic retribution from the football gods over forfeiting — this is a dangerous game. Jets outright over Colts 24-20, no Super Bowl III revenge, New York City explodes.
