Edwin Valero Becomes Champion In Recess; Looks Ahead To 140

News

Edwin Valero, fresh off his dominating win over Antonio DeMarco Saturday night, has been named the WBC Lightweight champion in recess. The WBC wanted to give Valero time to heal from the gash he received from an accidental elbow by DeMarco in the second round of their fight. In order to keep the belt from staying stagnant, the WBC will award their lightweight title to the winner of Humberto Soto and an opponent to be named later. As champion in recess, Valero is eligible to challenge for the title whenever he is healthy enough to get back into the ring.

“The WBC is hereby naming Edwin Valero champion in recess for him to be allowed the necessary time to recover from the injury, and to make his decision regarding the division where he will continue his career,” said WBC President Jose Sulaiman.

Edwin Valero is also considering a move to the light welterweight division. Valero plans to petition the WBC to let him take a fight at 140 lbs, a move the WBC seems likely to approve. Valero said that he wanted to fight in Texas and he wanted to fight Juan Diaz. That has all the elements for a great fight.
