New Prince of Persia Trailer Arrives

News, Trailers

Just days before the trailer was set to be attached to Tim Burton’s Alice in Wonderland, Disney has gone ahead and debuted the second official trailer for Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time on MySpace. The film stars Jake Gyllenhaal as Prince Dastan, Gemma Arterton (Quantum of Solace) as Tamina, Alfred Molina, Ben Kingsley, and Toby Kebbell. We showed you the first trailer last November, which had a robust score. Here, a few months later, we get a little more backstory and get a look at some new special effects. Will it recapture the magic of the old serials of the ’50s (but with a drastically large budget), or will it be yet again another crappy movie based off of a video game? And if anyone’s crying foul at Jake Gyllenhaal playing a Persian, well, John Wayne did play Genghis Khan.

Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time is directed by Mike Newell, who previously gave us Donnie Brasco and Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire. The screenplay was co-written by Doug Miro and Carlo Bernard (Disney’s upcoming The Sorcerer’s Apprentice) from a story drafted by Jordan Mechner, one of the video game’s original creators. Disney hopes to kick sand in the face of the competition when Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time hits theaters on May 28, 2010.

The Pulse: The two trailers that I’ve seen have a good tone, but high-flying acrobatics and stunts and tons of CG don’t always translate to must-see popcorn entertainment. I mean I’m not expecting Jake Gyllenhaal to all of a sudden become Douglas Fairbanks or Errol Flynn. But if it’s May 28th and I have to choose between this and Sex and the City 2 as the movie to see on release day, I know which one I’m picking.

Sound Off: Prince of Persia – will you be seeing it?
