Chris Evans is Captain America

Casting News, News, Top Story

Well, I guess the suits at Marvel Studios noticed what I and many others noticed with the two Fantastic Four movies. Chris Evans was the brightest spot, not just because his superhero name is “The Human Torch,” but because he had the charisma that his fellow teammates lacked. Now Heat Vision has confirmed it’s scoop that Chris Evans is officially cast in the role of Steve Rogers for The First Avenger: Captain America. Other candidates that were in the running to wear the red, white and blue included Mike Vogel (Cloverfield, She’s Out of My League), Jensen Ackles, Ryan Phillippe and The Office‘s John Krasinski.

While reps for Marvel and Evans are mum on the matter, meaning it isn’t flat-out, one-hundred percent official, Heat Vision is pretty reliable with its intel.

The news comes a week after it was announced that Hugo Weaving would be playing the villain Red Skull.

The Pulse: If Ryan Reynolds can be a part of multiple superhero franchises, why not Evans? Now here’s a guy I first started noticing with Not Another Teen Movie and Cellular – the latter of which he had to deal with Jason Statham (not an easy feat). Then he did a mixture of comedy and action as The Human Torch in the Fantastic Four movies. And he’s been moving along steadily ever since with roles in Danny Boyle’s Sunshine, Street Kings and Push. But you can tell he’s been itching to do more comic-book related fare, which is why he is starring in the ensemble action vehicle The Losers from DC Comics’ Vertigo and he plays one of the ex-boyfriends that Scott Pilgrim must defeat in Edgar Wright’s (Hot Fuzz, Shaun of the Dead) adaptation of Scott Pilgrim vs. the World.

Evans and Weaving should make for an interesting pairing, but then there’s the back-of-your-mind thought that Joe Johnston is directing. After the huge disappointing that was The Wolf Man at least he doesn’t have to worry about CGI fur blocking his direction.

So I got to ask, what does everyone think of Chris Evans playing Captain America? Do you like the decision or should Marvel have picked someone else? Who should comprise the rest of the cast? And finally, what’s up with that title?
