The State of Wrestling: What Would Brock Do?

Columns

This article will be receiving a makeover in the coming weeks meaning that everybody who enjoys reading my column should be looking for it under a different name in the Tuesday timeslot. There are many reasons but why worry about them when we can spend this time talking about wrestling right?

Brock Lesnar was without a doubt one of the top superstars to lead the era of the WWE after Austin left. Or while Austin was leaving, however you see it. He had a tirade through the elite superstars and went on to live up to his namesake “The Next Big Thing”. The problem was that his heart wasn’t really into wrestling and in 2004, Brock decided to leave for other ventures. The question is: Had Brock Lesnar not left the WWE, where would he currently be in the WWE?

This is an interesting question as John Cena, Batista, Triple H, etc. are running the roost of the WWE upper echelon. How would Brock have paired up with these guys? Many of the top tiers he has never had a high-profile feud with or even wrestled if memory serves me correct. This can be called fantasy booking but I will not go through long and drawn out storylines in order to place a man into a company which he will more than likely never return to. Instead, I am going to say where he should be at right now. Better? Good.

At this point, about 8 years into his WWE career, Brock should be on the Smackdown! Brand. Of course he would have his legendary battles with Triple H, John Cena and others but right now is where they are building up Lesnar as the ultimate heel, feeding him opponent after opponent but elevating the guys they are feeding him at the same time. Lesnar wasn’t too bad as a face but him as a monster heel is how he will always be remembered. The thing about Smackdown! Is that they never have a solid main event level because the majority of the main event guys are all on Raw. Look at the current main event scene on Smackdown!: Chris Jericho, Edge, The Undertaker (possibly) and who else is there? C.M. Punk? Possibly. Rey Mysterio? Sure. Who else is there that is a legitimate main even player?

In 2010 Brock will be the person who locks onto that World Heavyweight Championship and doesn’t let go. His reign can elevate the faces but he will never have to get rid of the belt until someone has been elevated and gained enough fan support that they have to go over such as a John Morrison or a Kofi Kingston, those guys that are almost at that level but need a good heel to play off of. This would also in turn make Smackdown! A viable brand who doesn’t look like the bastard child of Raw because Brock, if left alone, will become the unstoppable force which means he could be compared to guys like Cena and Batista but they are never interacted with unless the big money feud heads into Wrestlemania. A Brock Vs. Cena or Brock Vs. Batista feud is the biggest money grab that can be made from a show, even bigger than Cena Vs. Batista in my humble opinion.

That is my opinion though, Brock Lesnar as Smackdown’s main event player is where he would be in 2010. The structure of the cards means that he is too big a star to get lost in the shuffle of the guys on Raw and also doesn’t mind working Tuesdays unlike some other guys. At the same time, Raw is the flagship show as the WWE always likes to point out so maybe Batista would be swapped over to Smackdown! while Brock takes the other side of the Cena feud for a bit. That doesn’t make Batista as big a star as Brock but at least place holds a spot on Smackdown! when it is time to rebuild him after the inevitable loss to Cena.

You have other thoughts for what Brock would be doing right now? Let us know.
