Charlie Bartlett Star To Battle Vamps in Fright Night Remake

Casting News, News

Congratulations Anton Yelchin. If talks go through for you to take on the role of Charlie Brewster in the Fright Night remake, you can look forward to a lifetime of people quoting “You’re so cool, Brewster!”

The Hollywood Reporter is reporting that Yelchin is currently in negotiations to star in DreamWorks’ remake of the 1985 horror film, Fright Night. Yelchin would play Charlie Brewster, the paranoid teen who is convinced his next door neighbor is a bloodsucking vampire.

Criag Gillespie (Lars and the Real Girl) will direct from a script written by Marti Noxon (Buffy the Vampire Slayer).

The Buzz: In his short career, Yelchin has proved that he has the chops to tackle pretty much any role. If there needs to be a Fright Night remake, I am perfectly happy with the idea of J.J. Abrams’s Pavel Chekov headlining the picture.

I am a little disappointed, though, that rumors of the metatextual nature of the script seem to not be panning out. Word was that an early version of the script had the movie take place in a world where the original ’80s Fright Night existed.

I’m a sucker for movies that dwell in the meta so when I heard word that Chris Sarandon would be playing himself in the Fright Night remake, I grew excited. By having the new film have a character named Charlie Brewster, though, it seems this is no longer the case — hopefully. Because as much as I like the idea of a meta-Fright Night remake, it’s too big of a coincidence to believe that a kid named Charlie Brewster would find his life eerily echoing the plot of Fright Night.

If anything, hopefully the Fright Night remake will mean that the Fright Night 2 DVD will go back into print. That thing is expensive to buy on the secondary market now.

Sound Off: Now that the the role of Charlie Brewster has been filled, who else would you like to see round out the cast of Fright Night? Who should pick up the Peter Vincent role originated by Roddy McDowell? More importantly, who gets to play Evil Ed?
