Deadline Hollywood is reporting that September 3rd will be the release date for Machete.
Back in February we told you that Harvey and Bob Weinstein passed on distributing Machete, written by Robert Rodriguez and produced through his company Troublemaker Studios. 20th Century Fox was the studio that won a bidding war and obtained distribution rights.
While a summer release for Machete would have been ideal, it just wouldn’t be feasible with close to 100 films being released in a four-month period. So the studio has decided to unleash the film two months after its Predators film, another Robert Rodriguez production. It will be released Labor Day Weekend. So here we have a movie about a day laborer who gets revenge and it’s being released on Labor Day. Seems appropriate to me.
Ethan Maniquis, the longtime editor of the films of Robert Rodriguez, co-directs with Rodriguez in what is his first, big opportunity to direct a feature for Hollywood. And to make sure he’s got the tools to do it, Rodriguez has assembled an intriguing cast. Stars include Danny Trejo in the titular role, Robert De Niro (I’m sure this was a game of phone tag involving Rodriguez, Quentin Tarantino and De Niro), Jessica Alba, Michelle Rodriguez, Lindsay Lohan, Steven Seagal, Jeff Fahey, Cheech Marin and Don Johnson.
With a September release, that means we are guaranteed at least one R-rated testosterone-filled movie a month between July and September. There’s Predators in July, The Expendables in August, and Machete in September.
