Sergio Martinez Takes Middleweight Title From Kelly Pavlik

News

Sergio Martinez captured the WBC and WBO middleweight titles from Kelly Pavlik earlier this evening in Atlantic City, NJ. Martinez won by unanimous decision with scores of 115-111, 116-111, and 115-112. Pavlik knocked Martinez down in the seventh round.

Martinez opened up a cut on Pavlik in the first round that caused bleeding from the champion. Martinez won the early rounds, taunting Pavlik along the way. Pavlik made a comeback in the middle rounds until Martinez dominated the ninth. Pavlik was a bloody mess and Martinez reverted back to showboating. Pavlik’s face looked terrible by the end and the win was well-deserved for Martinez.

In the co-feature from Montreal, super middleweight champion Lucian Bute stopped Edison Miranda with an uppercut in the 3rd. Miranda beat the count but the referee stopped the bout giving Bute the TKO victory.

Mike Jones, Matt Korobov, and Ronald Hearns were all victorious on the Atlantic City undercard.
