Welcome to the party beautifuls. We’re here all night long following every pick and giving some insight into the draft. Our draft Guru Jeremy Henneghan will be in providing pick analysis and Top 5 remaining. I’ll be announcing every pick and giving opinions. If you want to join the party, head into the forums and post your thoughts and you might make it into the article. The Draft is about to begin so stay tuned.
Jeremy: Looking at the first ten picks, most of them came out as expected. We knew it’d be Bradford, Suh, and McCoy in the top 3, but OT was unclear who was the top one. McClain is a MLB and in the past few drafts, middle linebackers have dropped. the last mLB to get drafted in the top 10 was Brian Urlacher, so it was a surprise to see him go there, but it was Oakland. Of course, Alualu was the surprise of the first round. He had been rising, but no one had thought he was top 10 talent. Trading up for Anthony Davis wasn’t necessary I think for the Niners, Brandon Graham would’ve worked best in a 3-4, but he’ll still be good for Philly. Packers and Cowboys get some decent steals in the round, Bulaga and Bryant were rated in my top 15. Tebow, was waaaay over drafted, but how could they resist all the hype? Dan Williams fell as well.
Chad: As for my thoughts…I’m going to the bar.
With the 32nd overall pick, the New Orleans Sainst select: Patrick Robinson CB Florida State
He’s fallen a little over the last month or so, he showed good speed in college and should help the pass defense.
Jeremy: A little high for Robinson. They had many other needs, higher needs, that should’ve been there. That was a downer to finish the first round. If only the draft kept going.
Jeremy’s Top 5 Available
4. Jimmy Clausen QB, Notre Dame
19. Everson Griffen DE, USC
27. Brian Price DT, UCLA
28. Golden Tate WR, Notre Dame
29. Sergio Kindle OLB, Texas
Jeremy: Just looking at my best available, I think Griffen or Price would the best pick. They need help along their defensive line.
Now on the clock, THE SUPER BOWL CHAMPION NEW ORLEANS SANTS!
With the 31st overall selection, the Indianapolis Colts select: Jerry Hughes DE TCU
Nice insurance for Freeney and Mathis.
Jeremy: Good pick. Great pass rusher for the Colts. Key to the great defense the Horned Frogs had. Hughes is undersized, is a tweener at de/olb. But undersized DEs are Indy’s specialty.
HA! Jon Gruden just said dumbass on air.
Jeremy: 7 picks right so far. Not too bad, I’ll have to compare myself to other mockers out there tonight. I’ll post an updated mock draft rounds 2-7 tomorrow along with analysis of each team’s first round pick.
They need to make an impact to knock off the Jets who have improved drastically. Taylor Mays may fit along side Bob Sanders.
Indy is on the clock.
With the 30th overall selection, the Detroit Lions select: Jahvid Best RB California
I like Best, I think he’s one of the best RBs in the league.
Jeremy: Good insurance for Kevin Smith, because he tore ACL last year. Although Best has some injury concerns too.
TRADE The Detroit Lions have traded back up to the 30th overall pick. Don’t know who this is for.
Damnit ESPN, why did you have to hint that Minnesota might take Jimmy Clausen, please no.
Jeremy’s Top 5 Available
4. Jimmy Clausen QB, Notre Dame
19. Everson Griffen DE, USC
22. Jerry Hughes OLB, TCU
27. Brian Price DT, UCLA
28. Golden Tate WR, Notre Dame
Minnesota on the cap, maybe they can take Brett Favre’s grandchild.
With the 29th overall selection, the New York Jets: Kyle Wilson CB Boise State
Sweet Jebus, Kyle Wilson and Darelle Revis on the edges. Wow can those two shut down offenses.
Jeremy: Jets take best available Kyle Wilson, a little undersized, he may have to prove he can stand up to bigger receivers. He also has great punt returning ability.
J-E-T-S JETSJETSJETS are on the clock, Sergio Kindle is available, seems like a good fit to me.
With the 28th pick in the first round, the Miami Dolphins select: Jared Odrick DT Penn State
Jeremy: Great pick. Will fit in at DE in Miami’s 3-4 defense. Promised my friend who loves Penn State and JoePa that Odrick would be the first Penn Stater to go.
Chad: Yeah, he’s a versatile player who can move around that defensive front.
And ESPN goes to commerical after the ticker shows the Dolphins pick being in.
Dolphins on the clock.
With the 27th overall pick, the New England Patriots Select: Devin McCourty CB Rutgers
He’s a solid player, New England doesn’t usually take DBs in the first round and I don’t know how well this is going to work out for the Pats.
Jeremy:Well New England has a need at corner and Belichick got his guy. Will pair McCourty with last year’s solid pick, Darius Butler.
Jeremy: I think the reason teams are shying away from Clausen is because his personality is kind of abrasive. Let me provide you with another example of teams passing on a QB who apparently had character issues: 1983 draft, Miami Dolphins, Dan Marino. Clausen is by no means being expected to be as good as Marino, but these two QBs should not have lasted so long in their drafts.
Jeremy’s Top 5 Available
4. Jimmy Clausen QB, Notre Dame
19. Everson Griffen DE, USC
21. Jared Odrick DL, Penn State
22. Jerry Hughes OLB, TCU
25. Kyle Wilson CB, Boise State
New England back on the clock.
With the 26th overall selection, the Arizona Cardinals select: Dan Williams DT Tennessee
Good pick, he’s a good 3-4 tackle. Jeremy agree’s almost word for word….
Jeremy: Really rose his stock during his senior season.
Jeremy: Let the Tebow blowing begin…
Arizona is on the clock.
Jeremy: I’m sorry, but Tebow is an amazing character guy, he’s a great leader, and hard worker, but that arm will not do well in the NFL. Bank on it.
Chad: Football is about winning and he wins. He works harder than most and if his new throwing motion sticks, I think he’s going to do just fine in the NFL. I was one of the people who was against him going into the process, but the fact that he was willing to change his motion to make it in the NFL, I don’t think he will be denied.
With the 25th overall selection, the Denver Broncos select: Tim Tebow QB Florida
Ahead of Clausen? Wow, that surprising. But with Tebow’s new throwing motion and competitive drive I think this is going to work.
Jeremy: Tebow gone. Maybe he can become a good blocker, because he will not be a good QB. No matter what Jon Gruden says.
OMG that was fun. Nobody on ESPN knew they were on so Kiper and Young were just talking back and forth about the possible pick. And Berman noticed they were on and started waving his arm to get everyone to shut up. It was marvelous. WTF!!!!! TIM TEBOW IS ON THE PHONE!!!!!!!!!!!!!! With a DENVER HAT!!! Tim Tebow is going to Denver.
Baltimore is on the clock. And there is a show going on on the stage.
With the 24th overall selection, the Dallas Cowboys select: Dez Bryant WR Oklahoma State
Best WR available this year. Good pick for Dallas, he’ll make this offense very good.
Cowboys trade up!
Patriots on the Clock.
Jeremy: We could see Dez Bryant going here.
Jeremy’s Top 5 Available.
4. Jimmy Clausen QB, Notre Dame
12. Dan Williams DT, Tennessee
15. Dez Bryant WR, Oklahoma State
19. Everson Griffen DE, USC
21. Jared Odrick DL, Penn State
With the 23rd overall selection, the Green Bay Packers select: Bryan Bulaga OT Iowa
His stock has fallen since the end of the year, but he’s a solid OT and our own Jeremy Henneghan had him in the top 10, so this could be a big steal for the Pack.
Jeremy: Best available player. Good job Ted Thompson.
Here come the Packers.
With the 22nd overall selection, the Denver Broncos select: Demaryius Thomas WR Georgia Tech
First WR taken, he was a good player for Ga Tech, but I still think Dez Bryant was the best WR available despite the “baggage”
Jeremy: Mistake in my opinion. Even though people think that Dez Bryant has character issues, but he’s just an NFL receiver who has the kind of characteristics that you want in a receiver. Thomas will have to become much better at running routes.
It’s been a pretty fast moving night, the Broncos are on the clock after trading with the Patriots and the pick is in just like that.
Jeremy’s Top 5 Available:
4. Jimmy Clausen QB, Notre Dame
10. Bryan Bulaga OT, Iowa
12. Dan Williams DT, Tennessee
15. Dez Bryant WR, Oklahoma State
19. Everson Griffen DE, USC
With the 21st overall pick, the Cincinnati Bengals select: Jermain Gresham TE Oklahoma
Cincy is loaded at TE now. Gresham was a great weapon for Bradford and will be a great weapon for Palmer.
Jeremy: Great red zone threat for Carson Palmer here. Gresham will provide a great target and will have to prove his knees can stand up to the hitting.
Wow, Erin Andrews taking a break from Dancing With the Stars to sit around and watch the draft with Jimmy Clausen.
Cincy is on the clock.
With the 20th overall selection, the Houston Texans select: Kareem Jackson
He’s the best man to man coverage guy in the draft. Wilson has better upside, but Jackson has been a fast riser in the last month.
Jeremy: Kareem Jackson had been zooming up draft boards apparently over the past 2 or 3 weeks
Houston is on the Clock. Kyle Wilson seems to be a great fit for the Texans.
Jeremy: I agree, Wilson would be an excellend selection here. Everson Griffen is also a possibility too.
With the 19th overall selection, the Atlanta Falcons select: Sean Weatherspoon OLB Missouri
Best OLB in the draft and possibly the best LB in the draft. Solid pick to help that D in Atlanta that has been pretty bad.
Jeremy:Good pick for the Falcons. Dmitroff is a great GM in my opinion. Mike Peterson is getting older.
Another quick pick.
Jeremy: Kiper said a few weeks ago that Pouncey was given a higher grade than Nick Mangold had a few years back, so it’s no surprise that Pouncey was taken much earlier.
With the 18th overall selection, the Pittsburgh Steelers select: Markice Pouncey G/C Florida
He’s got versatility and fits in the Steelers running game.
Jeremy: Coming into the draft we knew that Pouncey was heavily coveted by the Steelers and Broncos.
Jeremy’s Top 5 Available
4. Jimmy Clausen QB, Notre Dame
10. Bryan Bulaga OT, Iowa
12. Dan Williams DT, Tennessee
15. Dez Bryant WR, Oklahoma State
19. Everson Griffen DE, USC
Pittsburgh is on the clock, with Big Ben’s problems you could see Clausen as possible. Pouncey is a choice too.
We’re over halfway done with this. There have been a lot of surprises early on and still a lot of good players left.
With the 17th overall pick, the San Fransisco 49ers select: Mike Iupati
The 49ers have really helped fix the 49ers O-Line. Nice pick. Pouncey probably a better player but Iupati has better upside.
San Fran is on the clock. I think Kyle Wilson could be the pick, might be time for Clausen though.
With the 16th pick, the Tennessee Titans select: Derrick Morgan DE Georgia Tech
He’s a well rounded player who can do a little of everything. He won’t blow you away with skills, but he’ll get the job done.
Jeremy: Tennessee picks up the best available defensive lineman. He’s a safe pick by the Titans.
Tennessee is on the clock.
With the 15th overall selection, the New York Giants select: Jason Pierre-Paul DE South Florida
Great speed rusher for USF, he was a fast riser in the last year. Derek Morgan is the better overall player, but JPP is a better pure pass rusher.
Jeremy: JPP is a huge risk/reward pick. In my opinion, I don’t think he’ll be successful.
G-Men on the Clock.
With the 14th overall selection, the Seattle Seahawks select: Earl Thomas DB Texas
He’ll be a good CB or Safety in the NFL, great pick for Seattle.
Jeremy: Very good pick, although not best available for me. Projects to either a corner or safety.
Jeremy’s Top 5 Available
4. Jimmy Clausen QB, Notre Dame
10. Bryan Bulaga OT, Iowa
11. Derrick Morgan DE, Georgia Tech
12. Dan Williams DT, Tennessee
13. Jason Pierre-Paul DE, USF
Seattle back on the Clock.
With the 13th pick, the Philadelphia Eagles select: Brandon Graham DE Michigan
Boos from the crowd, sounds good for the Eagles.
Sounds like this one is for Earl Thomas. Jeremy echo’s these sentiments.
Back to having Denver on the clock…never mind, The Philadelphia Eagles are now on the clock.
With the 12th overall selection, the San Diego Chargers Select: Ryan Matthews RB Fresno State
Good pick, he’ll fit in wonderfully with Darren Sproles.
Jeremy: Second leading rusher in NCAA FBS behind Toby Gerhart. Mathews is a big back that will be able to handle the load for the Chargers.
ANOTHER TRADE San Diego Picks up Miami’s 12th overall selection
Sounds like it’s for Ryan Matthews. Odd since most mock drafts have Matthews falling to the Chargers anyway.
With the 11th overall selection the San Fransisco 49ers select: Anthony Davis OT Rutgers
A little surprising considering they have Joe Staley.
Jeremy: Yea, they have Joe Staley, but the right side of their offensive line is garbage.
Trade almost has to be for Jimmy Clausen, no?
WE Have a TRADE, DENVER TRADE THE 11th Pick to the San Fransisco 49ers
Denver gets the 13th pick and a fourth rounder for the 11th pick.
With the tenth overall selection, the Jacksonville Jaguars select: Tyson Alualu DT California
Huh? Well they needed D-Line help, but I thought they were looking DE.
Jeremy: Surprise!! Again! This will appear a huge reach, but then again, so was Derek Cox last year from William and Mary. He had 4 ints.
Jacksonville is on the Clock
Jeremy’s Top 5 available:
4. Jimmy Clausen QB, Notre Dame
10. Bryan Bulaga OT, Iowa
11. Derrick Morgan DE, Georgia Tech
12. Dan Williams DT, Tennessee
13. Jason Pierre-Paul DE, USF
With the 9th pick, the Buffalo Bills select: CJ Spiller RB Clemson
He’s an electric player, but I don’t think he’s an every down back. Fred Jackson will take some pressure off but this isn’t going to be a Chris Johnson type impact player.
Jeremy: Spiller was not going to escape the top 10, not many people, if any had Spiller going to Buffalo. With many other needs (QB, WR, OL, defensive line) they take best available player
Buffalo is on the clock quickly
With the 8th overall selection, the Oakland Raiders select: Roland McClain LB Alabama
Quick pick here from the Raiders. Well that was off the wall, he wasn’t expected to go this high but he was the best available MLB.
Jeremy: Surprise!! That’s a slow 40 time for Al Davis, but I’ve read that Kirk Morrison had been shopped around.
Jeremy’s Top 5 available
4. Jimmy Clausen QB, Notre Dame
8. CJ Spiller RB, Clemson
10. Bryan Bulaga OT, Iowa
11. Derrick Morgan DE, Georgia Tech
12. Dan Williams DT, Tennessee
Oakland Raiders on the Clock, Jeremy has Bruce Campbell going here. It’s easy to see the Seamonster taking Campbell since he’s got a great 40 time for a OT.
Seventh pick in the NFL Draft, the Cleveland Browns select: Joe Haden CB Florida
Jeremy: Haden will be a good addition across from Wright on the Cleveland defense. 40 time aside, that won’t matter. He’ll be a great NFL corner.
Joe Haden on the phone. He looks sad, I think he’s the pick for the Browns.
Cleveland Browns on the Clock, Jeremy’s mock has Eric Berry here, since that’s not happening I could see a trade down or possibly Jason Pierre-Paul
Jeremy’s Top 5 Available
4. Jimmy Clausen QB, Notre Dame
8. CJ Spiller RB, Clemson
9. Joe Haden CB, Florida
10. Bryan Bulaga OT, Iowa
11. Derrick Morgan DE, Georgia Tech
With the sixth pick in the NFL Draft, the Seattle Seahawks Select: Russell Okung OT Oklahoma State
Good pick, Gruden wanted Spiller here, but Okung is the right choice.
Jeremy: Great pick for Seattle. They get their replacement for Walter Jones and could possibly get Clausen at 14 if they want to.
Jeremy: Seattle goes OT here. I think they need to replace Walter Jones. Build from the inside out and protect your QB.
Seattle is on the clock, Jeremy has Bryan Buluga going here in his last mock, with the way things are falling I think Russell Okung could be the pick.
With the fifth overall pick the Kansas City Chiefs Select: Eric Berry Safety Tennessee
Berry is my second best player in the draft so this is a great bargain at 5.
Jeremy: I don’t totally disagree with this pick. I was just going by what Scott Pioli has done in the past. I will admit that i’m wrong, and probably will be wrong a lot tonight haha
Two straight in the loss column for Jeremy Henneghan.
Jeremy: Okung should be next. Last year KC took Tyson Jackson DE, LSU over Aaron Curry OLB, Wake Forest, so I think Pioli takes positional value over the better prospect: Okung over Berry.
Jeremy’s Top 5 Available
3. Russell Okung OT, Oklahoma State
4. Jimmy Clausen QB, Notre Dame
7. Eric Berry S, Tennessee
8. CJ Spiller RB, Clemson
9. Joe Haden CB, Florida
Kansas City on the clock. Jeremy has Trent Williams going here, I’m not sure that’s going to happen.
Jeremy: I got the wrong player there. Either way, Okung or Williams, they will both be successful.
With fourth overall selection, The Washington Redskins select: Trent Williams OT Oklahoma
Three Sooners in the first 4 picks, and they weren’t really that good last year. True they had injuries but still. When you’ve got 3 picks in the top 4 you should be crushing your competition.
Redskins on the Clock, Jeremy Henneghan has the Skins taking OT Russell Okung.
With the third overall selection, the Tampa Bay Bucs select: Gerald McCoy DT Oklahoma
He fits with their 3 spot DT need and I think he’ll be a lot like Warren Sapp for the Bucs. McCoy had tears in his eyes as the pick was made.
Jeremey: Not much analysis with these first 3 picks. Went as most everyone has predicted it.
Looks like McCoy is the pick as he’s on the phone and smiling like he’s hearing good news.
Tampa is on the clock. Jeremy Henneghan has Gerald McCoy going to the Bucs here.
With the second pick in the NFL Draft the Detroit Lions Select: Ndamukong Suh DT Nebraska
Best player in the draft. Great pick for the Lions.
Jeremy Henneghan has the Lions taking Ndamukong Suh with this pick. I think that’s great pick and he’ll be the anchor of their defense for years.
10 minutes between picks this year, Rams used about 4 of them. Detroit is on the Clock.
With the First Overall Pick the St. Louis Rams Select: Sam Bradford QB Oklahoma
From Henneghan: The Rams made the right choice. They needed a franchise QB and now they’ve got one. I think Clausen will be the better pro, but if the Rams can protect Bradford, I imagine he can be just as successful.
The Rams are on the clock as they’ve been since the end of the season, most people are expecting Sam Bradford will be the pick including our own Jeremy Henneghan. Personally, the Rams have a ton of holes so I’d go with the best player available which is Suh.
Eric Berry just smiled at the camera during intros, I’d pick him second overall.
Jeremy: Alright everybody, try to soak in what kiper and mayock says, and try to block out what McShay says…wonder why he’s not at the desk with everyone.
Top 5 Available:
1. Ndamukong Suh DT, Nebraska
2. Gerald McCoy DT, Oklahoma
3. Russell Okung OT, Oklahoma State
4. Jimmy Clausen QB, Notre Dame
5. Sam Bradford QB, Oklahoma
Bradford on the phone, he’s got a big smile.
Mixture of cheers and boos from the fans in attendance. Not a slam dunk pick but he was the best QB available for me.
