2010 NFL Mock Draft – Final

Top Story

* = Sleeper picks (some may be different than from article I had yesterday)
This draft is as of April 21. I have to submit it in time to be up for draft day. The Jacksonville/Oakland trade isn’t included because Groves hasn’t had his physical yet.

1. St. Louis SAM BRADFORD QB OKLAHOMA
There could be a different team making this pick, but I don’t think that’ll be happening. The Rams will take Bradford, but there’s a lot of new doubt because they traded former 1st round pick Adam Carriker. However, this won’t influence their decision (and desperate need now that they cut Marc Bulger) to draft a QB. Bradford will be a good pro if he can get a good supporting cast, be protected by a Rams offensive line who hasn’t been the greatest in the past, and he can get some good receivers. He has a super accurate arm, but if he’s behind a bad line, he’ll be batted around and end up injured quite a bit. The Rams need to protect him.

2. Detroit NDAMUKONG SUH DT NEBRASKA
This pick should be Suh because he’ll mean more to the team than an elite offensive tackle. Suh will be Detroit’s defensive playmaker and will dominate the middle. They can look for a good defensive tackle later in the draft, although they’ll have to make it with their second round pick because this year’s offensive line class is top heavy.

3. Tampa Bay GERALD MCCOY DT OKLAHOMA
McCoy is perfect for the Buc’s defense, although they probably would take Suh if he’s available. Tampa’s defense needs to find a way back to the way they used to be, so taking a dominant defensive tackle makes sense. McCoy is the second best prospect this year behind Suh, so Tampa will be able to fill a need and take the best available player.

4. Washington RUSSELL OKUNG OT OKLAHOMA STATE
Donovan McNabb has been brought in and Washington has solved their QB situation at least for another 2 years. Jason Campbell might be packaged with picks and traded on draft day. Washington is converting to the 3-4 defense, and with the addition of Adam Carriker, they have gotten an early start on that. Still, the number one need for Washington now is taking a franchise left tackle and that tackle is Russell Okung.

5. Kansas City TRENT WILLIAMS OT OKLAHOMA
I’ve heard people say that Williams is the number one tackle this year or a possible bust candidate…I disagree with both. Kansas City gets a versatile offensive lineman who is athletic and will give Matt Cassel better protection. Brandon Albert would be moved if the Chiefs do indeed pick an offensive tackle.

6. Seattle BRYAN BULAGA OT IOWA
Seattle has so many needs, but building on the offensive line is so important. Since there isn’t a huge difference maker left, they should go with an offensive tackle to take Walter Jones’ spot. Bulaga will be able to come in and start right away if need be. Bulaga had a thyroid condition take away a few college career games, but he’s checked out ok with that.

7. Cleveland ERIC BERRY S TENNESSEE
Safety is not a premium position, but Eric Berry can not fall any further than here. Teams don’t like paying safeties top 10 money, but Eric Berry is well worth this pick. Berry is the clear-cut top safety prospect now that Earl Thomas probably will be a corner in the NFL. Cleveland has needs everywhere and taking the best available here is the smartest decision they can make in this draft.

8. Oakland BRUCE CAMPBELL OT MARYLAND
Speaking of smart decisions, this is what NOT to do. Al Davis continues to use the 40 time and workouts to judge players. This has worked in the past and every once in a while, but it’s also why the Raiders have been in a free fall since their Super Bowl season of 2002. This franchise is in a never ending spiral down the black hole. Darius Heyward-Bey did worse than Louis Murphy last season and now Bruce Campbell will be another underachiever as a first round pick for the Raiders because he doesn’t belong at number 8 overall. He can become a good tackle, but being drafted this high will make expectations unreachable.

9. Buffalo JIMMY CLAUSEN QB NOTRE DAME
Clausen has smaller hands apparently, so some people are saying that he can’t be successful in Buffalo. This is bull. Clausen will bring leadership to a team that’s seriously in need of a leader who’ll remind them of the good ‘ole days. Clausen has been in a pro style offense and he’s been groomed for the NFL. If Buffalo takes Clausen, they’ll need to protect him and give him help just like the Rams will need to do. If you can’t protect the QB, you’re not going to succeed.

10. Jacksonville DERRICK MORGAN DE GEORGIA TECH
Aaron Kampman was signed, but he’s coming off ACL injury, plus Derrick Harvey isn’t the pass rusher he was envisioned to be. However he has been a good run defender. Morgan plays the run and pass equally well and has a non-stop motor. I saw a comment on NFL.com from someone saying that Morgan will quit on plays. That’s ignorant. This pick will be best available player. It just depends on how GM Gene Smith stacks his board.

11. Denver – from Chicago DEZ BRYANT WR OKLAHOMA STATE
Character concerns? Has Bryant ever been arrested? No. So the little character concerns are just the same characteristics that NFL wide receivers have. So what if he’s a diva? You want your WRs to want the ball all the time. Bryant will not fall out of the top 15, especially just because some people feel his character is in question. He’s undoubtedly the best and top WR prospect.

12. Miami DAN WILLIAMS DT TENNESSEE
Williams rode a huge Senior season to the top 15 of this year’s draft. Miami will be looking for a new nose tackle since Jason Ferguson is suspended and is getting older. This pick could also be Brandon Graham because Jason Taylor was let go.

13. San Francisco JOE HADEN CB FLORIDA
San Francisco’s pass defense was bad last year, so they possibly could pick Haden with this pick. He could be a top 10 pick, but some teams were scared off by his 40 time. Never the less, I still think he’ll be a very good NFL corner. Maybe not a shutdown corner, but a very good corner.

14. Seattle – from Denver CJ SPILLER RB CLEMSON
Rumor has it that the Giants want to draft Spiller. He won’t make it that far. Spiller is a top playmaker in this draft and he could be going even higher than this if someone wants to trade for him. He’s more of a complementary back, but he offers kick returning abilities.

15. New York Giants ROLANDO MCCLAIN MLB ALABAMA
In recent drafts, middle linebackers have dropped (last year James Laurinitis and Rey Maualuga). However, I think that the Giants really like McClain and since Antonio Pierce is gone, they’ll go for McClain here.

16. Tennessee JASON PIERRE-PAUL DE USF
I’ve read where scouts have called Pierre-Paul a freak. Well, maybe Pierre-Paul will remind Jeff Fisher about Jevan Kearse. JPP is a boom or bust product. He didn’t start many games at USF last year, and he came from 2 different JUCO programs prior to coming to USF. So there’s inexperience and risk associated with this pick.

17. San Francisco – from Carolina ANTHONY DAVIS OT RUTGERS
There are effort concerns with Davis, but he is still a first round prospect. San Francisco’s offensive line was bad last season and they need someone across from Joe Staley.

18. Pittsburgh EARL THOMAS CB/S TEXAS
The Steelers could be movers on draft night if they can find a trading partner for Big Ben. If nothing happens, Earl Thomas will most likely be the pick if he’s available. Thomas can probably make the switch from safety at Texas to NFL corner.

19. Atlanta BRANDON GRAHAM DE/OLB MICHIGAN
I think if Graham falls this far, the Falcons will jump on him. It could even be considered a steal, that’s how far up draft boards he’s moved this offseason. He’s an excellent pass rusher.

20. Houston KYLE WILSON CB BOISE STATE
Another riser after the season ended, Kyle Wilson separated himself from the second round corners and pushed up to a mid-to-late 1st round prospect. Houston is very thin at corner, so it will be a no brainer for them if he’s here.

21. Cincinnati JERMAINE GRESHAM TE OKLAHOMA
Chase Coffman was drafted by the Bengals last year in the third round, but I don’t think that’ll deter them from taking Gresham. Palmer can take all the receiving help he can get. Matt Jones and Antonio Bryant sure as heck won’t be reliable.

22. New England EVERSON GRIFFEN DE USC
Griffen has a tremendous jump off the line. He played both linebacker and defensive end at USC, so he’s good for New England’s 3-4. After JPP, he’s got the most potential and could become an elite defensive end, especially under the eye of Belichick.

23. Green Bay CHARLES BROWN OT USC
Green Bay desperately needs offensive line help. It’ll all depend on how Ted Thompson’s draft board is stacked. He drafts the best available player. Charles Brown is a former tight end. Many have had this pick penciled in since February.

24. Philadelphia SEAN WEATHERSPOON OLB MISSOURI
The Eagles traded for Ernie Sims but that doesn’t mean they’re set at linebacker. They still will need another one. Weatherspoon showed at the Senior Bowl and during his time at Mizzou that he is worthy of a first round pick.

25. Baltimore JARED ODRICK DT PENN STATE
Odrick is perfect for a 3-4 team. A lot of mockers and scouts might see him as a steal for lasting so long. He’ll be heavily coveted by the 3-4 teams in the mid-to-later first round.

26. Arizona SERGIO KINDLE OLB TEXAS
The loss of Karlos Dansby will force the Cardinals to find a new linebacker who can get to the QB and Kindle is very good at it. Arizona also has to look at offensive line. If they can’t give Matt Leinhart the chance to throw, he’ll never develop.

27. Dallas MIKE IUPATI OG IDAHO
Dallas doesn’t really like to select offensive linemen in the first round historically, but if Iupati is here, they’ll have to like him. He’s a great run blocker. During the Senior Bowl he showed that he may have some holding issues, but that isn’t enough to deter teams from seeing how he played in actual college games.

28. San Diego RYAN MATHEWS RB FRESNO STATE
Ladainian Tomlinson of course bolted for the Jets and Darren Sproles is not a number one back who can carry the load. He’s more of a complementary back. Ryan Mathews can be that main back in San Diego. Last year’s 2nd leading rusher in D1-A could be gone by the time the Chargers pick, so they could be in line to trade up for him.

29. New York Jets JERRY HUGHES DE/OLB TCU
Just because the Jets signed Jason Taylor doesn’t mean that they won’t draft another player at a similar position. Taylor is 35 years old, Vernon Gholston’s a bust, and Shaun Ellis is 32, so the Jets will still be looking for someone at DE or OLB.

30. Minnesota DEVIN MCCOURTY CB RUTGERS
The Vikes just signed Lito Sheppard, but that doesn’t make any difference. They still need depth and security at corner. It’s a tight race between McCourty and suddenly rising Kareem Jackson as another corner who could get into the first round.

31. Indianapolis MAURKICE POUNCEY C FLORIDA
Pouncey could be drafted as high as the top 15. Mel Kiper Jr. said that he had a higher grade than Nick Mangold had a few years back. So Pouncey could definitely appear anywhere from Pittsburgh to Arizona or Green Bay.

32. New Orleans BRIAN PRICE DT UCLA
Price is a shorter than you’d like DT, but he was the PAC-10 defensive player of the year and he terrorized backfields all season long. Price could drop out of the first round, but I can see him ending up on any of the last three teams (Saints, Colts, Vikings).
