The Philadelphia Phillies and pitcher Ryan Madson got a bit of bad news today as they found out Madson will need surgery on his big toe that he injured last week after kicking a chair after a rough outing.
Dr. Steven Raikin took a CT scan of the toe and decided the toe needed pins inserted to help the injury heal. “It’s not just like it’s a little crack. It’s got a couple pieces to it,” said Phillies Head Athletic Trainer Scott Sheridan. “The question is whether you leave it the way it is, or whether you pin it to help the healing process. It’s Dr. Raikin’s impression that the best way to handle this is go in and try to pin it, make it a more stable fracture and certainly hopefully help the healing process.”
The Phillies just got Brad Lidge back from the disabled list, but aren’t ready to throw him back into the closer’s role just yet, leaving Jose Contreas as the most likely closing candidate.
