The Cinema Guild is not widely known as say Warner Bros. or a company like Criterion, but the distributor has acquired a gem or two in recent years, like Sweetgrass or The Beaches of Agnes. Now they have acquired the U.S. distribution rights to Jeff Malmberg’s Marwencol, which won the Grand Jury Award for Best Documentary Feature at the 2010 South by Southwest Film Festival.
It is slated to be released in the fall.
The Pulse: Fabulous news. Robert Saucedo and I both agree Marwencol was one of the best features, not just documentaries, that played at this year’s SXSW festival. The film follows Mark Hogancamp and the fantasy world he creates after being attacked by several men outside of a bar. Left with brain damage, Hogancamp copes by setting up scenes with WWII era dolls and photographing them.
In a written statement published by Indiewire, Ryan Krivoshey of the Cinema Guild expresses that “‘Marwencol’ is like nothing you’ve ever seen. It not only captures the awakening of a bona fide artist, it brings to life a fictional universe with enough action, intrigue and romance to rival anything coming out of Hollywood this summer. We are very excited to be working with Jeff and his team on the release of his amazing film.”
I, for one, can’t wait to see it again.
