The Daily Review: Superman: War of the Supermen #1 by James Robinson

Reviews

James Robinson brings us the third and final chapter of his story on what happens when Kandor returns and finds itself at odds with the people of Earth.

Summary: Superman begins this battle by attempting to stop Zod from going to war with Earth, but Zod has already launched his army. Meanwhile, Lex Luthor emplanted a bomb in a spy which blows up New Krypton, killing everyone but Supergirl since her mother had placed her behind radioactive shielding. Lois Lane and Jimmy Olsen gather heroes (Superboy and Krypto, Steel, The Guardsman, and Nightwing and Starfire) to expose and take down General Lane. Superman and Supergirl cry while Zod brings his army to Earth.

Thoughts: Well, this was one hell of an opening, with the near genocide of New Krypton. Unfortunately, this occuring makes it hard to care about the fate of Zod’s army, since they now represent a non-existant world. Instead of a war of the worlds and a clash of cultures, it’s just a conquerer villian and paranoid government officials that we’re fighting now. The plot is, at this point, uninspired. The art, however, is another story entirely. Jamal Igle is a star and appears to be having a blast with all the flying Kryptonians and epic explosions. Even the reactions and expressions here are perfect, as Igle simply carries this issue, even while the plot took out it’s own most interesting element.

Rating: 4/10 – This is a below average book, saved from being truly bad by Jamal Igle’s excellent artwork. James Robinson has really lost his fastball between this and JLA.
