One of the great things about MMA is the ability to look ahead to future match-ups. Everyone does it. Fans, writers, and even fighters like to get in on the fun of looking into the future and playing matchmaker. In that sense, Randy Couture is no different than anyone else that watches the sport.
Couture made his intentions known on Monday that he’d like to face current champion Mauricio “Shogun” Rua after a scheduled fight with James Toney at UFC 118 in August, which is set to take place in Boston. Speaking on his Twitter account, the UFC Hall of Famer shared his thoughts on his plans for the rest of 2010.
“I’d love a crack at him after Toney in [August],” Couture wrote. “Maybe Rua in October [at] UFC 120.”
Although UFC President has said in the past that Couture could very well be in the title mix, he also came out yesterday and confirmed that the first title defense for Rua will come against the winner of the UFC 114 main event between Rashad Evans and Quinton “Rampage” Jackson.
The new champion has also expressed an interest in facing Couture. Speaking on a video blog after defeating Lyoto Machida, Rua said he considers Couture a hero, and it would be an honor to face him with the belt on the line.
UFC 120 has not been officially announced but most feel it will take place at the O2 Arena in London on Oct. 16. It’s also thought that the card could air on Spike TV. British fighter Dan Hardy is also expected to fight on the card as well.
