Thiago Tavares Off Of UFC 114 Fight With Melvin Guillard

News

A planned lightweight bout between Thiago Tavares and Melvin Guillard for UFC 114 has been canceled due to an elbow injury for Tavares. Although the UFC has yet to make an official announcement on the cancellation, a search for a replacement has begun.

Tavares hyper-extended his elbow in a training session, but it is still unclear how long the injury will keep the Brazilian fighter sidelined. Tavares’ manager, Alex Davis, confirmed the news of the injury overnight to MMAJunkie.com.

“Thiago just can’t seem to catch a break,” Davis said. “This would have been a great fight.”

Tavares (14-3-1) last fought in January, fighting Nik Lentz to a draw at UFC Fight Night 20. It was his first fight for the UFC since a Jan. 2009 win over Manvel Gamburyan at UFC 94.

Guillard (23-8-2) won a unanimous decision fight against Ronnys Torres at UFC 109 in February. Guillard has won four of his last five fights, with the only loss coming at the hands of Nate Diaz last September via a submission.
