Alistair Overeem Confident In His Abilities To Defeat Fedor Emelianenko

Coming off his domination of Brett Rogers this past Saturday, Strikeforce Heavyweight champion Alistair Overeem is convinced that he alone is the one to end Fedor Emelianenko’s run at the top of the sport. Overeem dispatched of Rogers in just 3:40 at Strikeforce: Heavy Artillery in St. Louis.

Overeem made no secret about his wanting an eventual match-up with Emelianenko in the post-fight press conference. After beating Rogers with much greater ease than Fedor did last fall, one could argue that Overeem very well could be the man to dethrone the current pound-for-pound king.

“I surround myself with people who have the same attitude, intelligent people which you can learn from and develop yourself,” Overeem said. “In the gym my sparring partners don’t really like me. There’s nobody else out there with the speed, technical ability and the sharpness [to beat Fedor]. I know how to turn myself into a very dangerous weapon.”

Although Overeem wants the match-up, there are many obstacles still in the way hindering the fight’s eventuality. Fedor has a fight with Fabricio Werdum next month at Strikeforce: Fedor vs. Werdum. Most feel Fedor will easily win the fight, but everyone has seen stranger results inside the cage.

The next, and perhaps biggest obstacle, will be getting Fedor’s management to agree to such a fight. It’s no secret that it’s no treat dealing with Fedor’s handlers. They could be the ones that stop such a fight from happening, however, if Strikeforce can put the fight together, it would be a great draw for a return to CBS this fall.
