Ultimate Comics Avengers 2 #2

When Mark Millar says he’s going to do something, generally he does it. So when he said that he was going to make a bigger, blacker Hulk, I rolled my eyes, and then he did it. And then I groaned. And then he spent an issue pummeling War Machine….and I smirked.
This book, much like the previous volume, just like Ultimates 1 and 2, is an example of what you get when you pick up a book by Mark Millar. He’s going to do what he wants to do, and if you like his work, then you’re going to like it, and if you don’t like Mark Millar, then you’re really not. He’s polarizing like that, in that he really is a “Love him or hate him” kind of writer. Now I for one love his work, so that’s fine-diddly-ine by me. I like the ultra violence, the random acts of violence, and the promise of Hulk on human cannibalism.
This issue is really just War Machine vs Millar’s Black Hulk who shall from this point be called……Cash. He’s given no less then two names (possibly no more as well, but hush), so I’m going with Cash. Cash works. Cash is a big black tattooed guy who used to be handicapped, but now he kills ganglords, drives their cars, lives in their houses, nails all of their women at once, etc etc. It’s business, and War Machine is there to try and pull him out of this life so he can work for Nick Fury. Cue giant one sided battle that does not end how you would expect.
That’s the meat of the issue, as nothing else really happens. There are a few pages devoted to Cash’s origin….kinda, and a few pages of Fury talking to Clint and Frank, and then the issue ends with a double page spread of our villain. But aside from the fight, which was kinda awesome, nothing really happened.
Leinil Yu continues to amaze me as I see this art and wonder what the hell happened with New Avengers and Secret Invasion, because those were hideous, and this is actually easy on the eyes. Is it the inker? I don’t know, but it looks great!
