Several months ago Kino International acquired a documentary that performed to much acclaim at the Edmonton and South By Southwest Film Festivals. The documentary was Winnebago Man. Starting July 9, the doc will make its way into theatres across the U.S.
And the timing couldn’t be better. As YouTube celebrates its five-year anniversary, Winnebago Man reveals the story of Jack Rebney – the most famous man you’ve never heard of – an RV salesman whose hilarious, foul-mouthed outbursts were caught on video in 1988, and circulated underground on VHS tapes in the ’90s before turning into a full-blown Internet phenomenon in 2005. The “Winnebago Man” clip has been seen by more than 20 million people worldwide and is regarded as one of the first and funniest viral videos.
The clip has become so big that it is a part of pop culture, drawing quite a following in Hollywood. It’s been quoted in movies and on TV by everyone from Ben Affleck to Alec Baldwin to SpongeBob SquarePants. Director Spike Jonze has given copies of clip as Christmas gifts and Conan O’Brien named it as one of his favorite videos on YouTube. It even served as inspiration to a scene in Iron Man 2.
