Roy Oswalt for Stephen Strasburg; Steve Phillips Would Do It

I like to kid Mets fans about the Kazmir/Zambrano deal and how it haunts their dreams.

Well, Steve Phillips wants to give Nationals fans nightmares as well…

Monday, Phillips was on the radio stating if he was the Nationals, he’d trade Stephen Strasburg to the Astros for Roy Oswalt. He cited that the Nationals should be in a win now attitude. Dan Steinberg, who was conducting the inverview, stated that Strasburg will have a better career than Oswalt, to which Phillips replied:

“You think he will? I don’t know that. And even if he is, if I think that I want Roy Oswalt to help me win this year, you know what?

“I’m one of the guys, I make that deal.”

Let’s see – the next big thing or a pitcher on the down side of his career?

If I’m a contender, I’d take Oswalt in a heartbeat. Sure, he’s got almost $30MM on his contract still and has had some injury problems in the past. He’s still a good pitcher though.

But to give up the top pitching prospect in the game, who you will control for 6 YEARS, the guy who will “save” your franchise, for a year and a half of Oswalt – it’s just rediculous. Plus, would Oswalt even approve a trade that sends him to Washington? Probably not; sources close to him said he’d only approve a trade to a team that would have one of the better shots to win the World Series (Yankees, Rays, Twins, Cardinals, Phillies would be my guesses).

In the end, I think Phillips evaluates baseball talent like he does his women.
