The Daily Review: Marvel The Heroic Age Secret Avengers #1 by Ed Brubaker and Mike Deodato

Reviews, Top Story

Brubaker gets his first Avengers book, as unmasked Steve Rogers, the top cop of Marvel, get’s his Swiss Army Knife team ready.

Summary: Rogers has Black Widow and Valkyrie working espionage. They steal a serpent crown from Roxxon, which turns out to have origins on Mars. Beast and War Machine are in charge of figuring that out, while Ant Man and Moon Knight handle espionage missions. Nova handles extraterrestial threats, but goes missing when searching Mars (being seduced by a snake of some kind), so the rest of the team unites to find him, while Sharon Carter, the team tactician is assaulted by The Shadow Council and someone who looks like Nick Fury.

Thoughts: The distinct roles for everyone is fantastic, as is the characterization of people in those roles, especially Eric O’Grady, The Ant-Man who Brubaker knocks it out of the park with. The only quible is that Nova talks to the World Mind who appears to be the old personality, not the current smart mouthed one, but that’s a small complaint in a great introductory first issue.

Rating: 8/10 – A great introduction to a diverse cast, with a unique set up.
