Phil Baroni and John Salter Will Fight at UFC 118

Phil Baroni will return to the UFC, and will fight John Salter at UFC 118, slated to take place in August at the TD Garden in Boston.

Baroni is likely fighting for his life in the organization ā€“ again ā€“ following a one-sided unanimous-decision loss to Amir Sadollah at UFC 106, which marked his return to the organization after a nearly five-year absence. Baroni’s return to the UFC was a bit of a surprise, and his former home, Strikeforce, issued a press release saying the organization had terminated his contract.

Nevertheless, the hard-hitting Baroni entered the UFC with three wins in four fights and opted to drop a weight class. But following a June 2009 middleweight loss to Joe Riggs and the defeat to welterweight Sadollah, the 34-year-old PRIDE veteran finds himself in a must-win situation.

He’ll get a challenge from Salter, an NAIA national wrestling champion who also owns a purple belt in Brazilian jiu-jitsu. The 25-year-old went 4-0 in just a seven-month pro career before he signed with the UFC. In his promotional debut, Salter then suffered a hard-fought third-round TKO loss to Gerald Harris at UFC Fight Night 20. Then, a UFC 113 fight was cut short when opponent Jason MacDonald suffering a nasty leg injury that left him with a dislocated ankle and multiple leg fractures.

Salter, nonetheless, earned the TKO victory for his fifth stoppage in five career wins.

The event is expected to air on pay-per-view, though Baroni vs. Salter will be part of the night’s un-aired preliminary card.
