Staff Picks: Fight To Watch
Corey’s Pick: Yuri Foreman vs. Miguel Cotto
June 5 on HBO
The biggest fight in June could also be the best when Miguel Cotto challenges WBA junior middleweight champion Yuri Foreman in the “Slugfest at the Stadium.” In the first fight at Yankee Stadium since Muhammad Ali and Ken Norton ended their trilogy, the bout will have the feel of a big-time event. Cotto is looking to prove he still has it after a devastating loss to Manny Pacquiao in November while Foreman is looking to become a star with a win. Neither man will be quick to back down, and a tough fight could await both.
Trent’s Pick: Andre Ward vs. Allan Green
June 19 on Showtime
The longer the Super Six tournament goes on, the more I like the points setup of the tournament. It adds that much more intrigue to a fight that already has a world title on the line. And the personal animosity being forged by Allan Green is a nice touch to build drama as well. I expect Ward to win, but watching Green attempt to knock his foe’s head off in order to gain ground in a tournament he just entered should be a fun ride.
Paul’s Pick: Yuri Foreman vs. Miguel Cotto
June 5 on HBO
I have to say that Foreman vs. Cotto has garnered my attention. This is one of those fights that will answer a lot of questions: Is Yuri Foreman a world class fighter? Does Cotto have anything left? We’ll know a lot about both guys after this fight. Plus, having a boxing card at Yankee Stadium is just cool as hell…I wish I could be there.
