May Reviews Part 1: Green Hornet, Second Coming, and More

Capsules, Reviews

I order my comics monthly, due to the discount on Mail Order Comics and the fact that it’s a half hour drive to my closest comic shop (which is impossible to make with 2 kids under the age of 3). So, as all of you guys come here and discuss the newest issue, I’m typically a month behind.

Yesterday, I received my comics that came out in May. I also have about 15-20 other comics from the last 2 months I haven’t read.

Chew #1 – This was one of those Image First comics they reprinted and sold for a $1. This was a great set up. A detective that can get clues of a case by eating people involved. Genius (and a little sick). I’ll be tracking down the rest of this series.

Kevin Smith’s Green Hornet #3 and #4 – I have no knowledge of Green Hornet prior to this series and I don’t feel lost at all. The only reason I bought it was because Smith’s name is on it. That said, it’s been fun learning a little of the character. I’ll probably wait until it’s over to say how good it is though.

New Mutants #13 – This issue was just there really. I didn’t like that they killed Vanisher; he was coming along nicely in X-Force and I was hoping he’d stick around for a while.

Red Robin #12 – Red Robin is the only DC title I buy on a regular basis. Drake has been one of my favorite characters since I started reading comics. This arc has been different, to say the least. I don’t dis-like it though; it’s brought out more of his character. I felt it closed out the previous year and Yosts run perfectly.

Weapon X Noir #1 – I really could have done without this book. I like Wolverine Noir, but this was a little more confusing and almost a waste of time.

Wolverine: Origins #48 – I’m getting kind of tired of Romulus; lets move on and get to some more of Wolverine’s history already.

X-Force #27 – I really didn’t mind Hellion’s injuries, as I’ve never really cared for the character. It was interesting see X-Force outed; the conflict between Beast and Cyclops has been pretty interesting and something I don’t feel they’ve touched on enough. Now Storm will be in on it too. I think the start of the book, about 10 pages or so, without word worked extremely well.

X-Men Legacy #236 – The one down fall of mail order comics is I have to wait on reading my subscriptions during events. I’ve had this issue sitting for at least a week. Bastion’s plan is looking pretty good, as he traps the X-Men a) within a bubble, b) without teleporters, and c) without Blackbirds. I like that Cable will still have a role now that he brought Hope back.

X-Men Second Coming Revelations: Blind Science #1 – This was a fun little book. I didn’t know much about Dr. Nemesis prior to him joining the team; his smug attitude plays off Jeffries ignorance well. Even with being able to see the ending a mile away, it was a solid read.

X-Men Second Coming Revelations: Hellbound #1 – Kind of a boring issue, as it just set up going to Limbo and their arrival there. It’s a nice mix of characters, although I could have done without Gambit on the team. Hopefully the next issue is better.

I also ran to my local used CD store, which sells comics, and picked up…

Secret Avengers #1 – I wasn’t going to buy this. I haven’t picked up an Avengers comic since the second arc of New Avengers. It was a definite impluse buy, and was it worth it. I like the idea of this team. It’s a mix of Avenger staples, mixed with some random heroes. I’m curious to see where this series goes.

Thunderbolts #144 – This is the first time in years that I’ve really enjoyed a Thunderbolts comic. I think it had a little more of the feel of the Busiek run. It’s being added to my pull list.

Still to read:
Deadpool #23 (It’ll be read tonight); Deadpool Corps #1 (I’ve been putting it off based of the reaction of those who have read it); Deadpool Team-Up #894 and #893 (I’ve got these 2 and 892, then it’s dropped); Flash #1 (It was a buck, so I figured I’d give it a shot); Hellboy in Mexico One-Shot (see Flash 1); Invincible Iron Man #26 (I need to get 25 before I read it); Justice League: Generation Lost #1 (see Flash 1); Ultimate Comics Avengers 2 #1 and #2 (I missed the last 2 issues of the first series, so I’m holding off until I get them); Ultimate Comics New Ultimates #1 (See Deadpool Corps, mixed with Flash 1); Wolverine #900 (it’s probably next in line to be read).
