Ivan Calderon successfully defended his WBO light flyweight title in Madison Square Garden with a unanimous decision victory over Jose Uribe. Calderon was down in the second round. Scores were 118-109 twice and 116-111.
Calderon remained elusive for most of the fight, aside from the shot on the chin that dropped him in the second round. The partisan Puerto Rican crowd got behind Calderon late in the fight with chants of “Ole!” each time the champion eluded one of his Mexican challenger’s punches.
