After the topic has been the center of discussion for the past two years, the league steps up and makes a new rule.

The new rule would impose a five-minute penalty for a blindside hit to the head, with an automatic game misconduct. The league will also consider supplemental discipline.

The league tried to get a rule pushed through during the season that would have given the league the right to inflict supplemental discipline after hits to the head, but the players felt rushed at the time and didn’t let the rule pass.

Mike Richards and Matt Cooke both had big hits last season that a lot of people felt were dirty, but at the time they weren’t against the rules, that has finally changed.
