MLB News: Detroit Tigers Placed Joel Zumaya on DL With Elbow Injury

News

Just another in the long line of arm injuries for Zumaya.

UPDATE: The Tigers have announced that Zumaya is done for the season with a fractured right olecranon.

Zumaya left Monday night’s game against the Twins after throwing a 3-2 pitch to Delmon Young and collapsing behind the mound in agony.

The training staff rushed out to check on the hard throwing righty. As they worked on him the camera angled showed his right hand shaking with his arm in obvious pain. It’s not the type of pain you generally see with a Tommy John injury, so the Tigers fear it could be something worse.

Zumaya missed half of the 2007 season after dislocating his right middle finger, and though he made it back for the stretch run, he suffered an even more severe injury, a dislocation of the AC joint in his shoulder, in an accident that October. The next year, Zumaya pitched in just 21 games before being shut down with a stress fracture in his throwing shoulder.

Zumaya elected not to have surgery, and he made it back to the big leagues in 2009 after a strenuous bout of rehabilitation. He eventually broke down, though, and a bone shard in his shoulder necessitated a corrective operation.

The Tigers recalled Casey Fein to take Zumaya’s spot on the roster.
