Huge loss for a Phillies line-up that was just getting going.
Chase Utley suffered a sprained thumb Monday while sliding into second trying to stretch a single into a double. Utley underwent an MRI this morning and was placed on the DL shortly afterwards.
Polanco has been dealing with a sore elbow for much of the season. He received a cortisone shot Monday and will give the shot time to take effect to numb the pain. Polanco admitted the injury will probably require offseason surgery.
Both players were in position to start the All-Star game for the National League.
The Phillies called up Greg Dobbs and Brian Bocock to fill the roster space.
