MLB News: Philadelphia Phillies 2B Chase Utley Undergoes Surgery On Injured Thumb

News

The surgery will put the second baseman out for 8 weeks.

Utley had surgery in New York on the right thumb Monday trying to stretch a single into a double.

Trainers said Utley must wear a splint on the thumb for five weeks before he begins rehabilitation. Utley and the Phillies will get a better idea exactly how long he will be sidelined once the stitches are removed from the thumb.

The Phillies are currently 3 1/2 games behind the Atlanta Braves and 2 games behind second place New York Mets.
