Burn Notice – Episode 4-5 Review

Top Story

My name is Michael Westen. I used to be a spy. Until…Greetings fellow Burn Notice fans. Another week has passed and with it…another chapter in the life of our favorite burned spy. When last we left Michael & Co., Michael and Jesse had just figured out that “Kendra,” the woman living next door to Kassar (the dead body they were searching for), is really an assassin. They also found a hidden tape in the wall that Kendra was attempting to get out when Michael and Jesse busted in. This week, we start with Michael and Fi trying to find a place to decode the data on the tape, but with no success. Michael sees that Kendra is watching them. He calls Sam to try to set a trap, but Kendra escapes and leaves a cell phone to contact Michael. Michael discusses selling the tape to Kendra with Jesse. Maddy comes in and wants Michael to meet someone. Her friend Lauren works at a clinic in Homestead and is having trouble with drug dealers. They’ve threatened to kill her boyfriend, David, if he calls the police on them again. David wants to resolve the issue within the confines of the law, but Michael talks him into letting him and his people do it their way. Kendra callas and Michael offers to sell her the tape for $50,000. Sam and Fi put a tracker on some money, Jesse buys some drugs, and then they track the money to a local strip club, where the boss (Cutler) works out of. Apparently, he’s from New York and owes a lot of money to the Mexican drug lords he bought his heroin from. In order to get this intel, Fi calls Sugar (the drug dealer that lived below Michael in Season 1). Sugar sees Cutler and tries to leave, saying the guy is “psychotic.” Apparently, they have some bad blood between them. Cutler sees Sugar and tries to stop him, but Sam intervenes and takes a beating to help Sugar escape. Sam then takes out some of the guys and escapes on his own. Michael convinces David to close up the clinic’s entrances and exits and asks him to find him some fentanyl from a veterinarian to help convince Cutler to deal with him and lead him to the drug stash. Michael then went to meet Cutler. After that, Michael (with Sam in disguise) tries to setup Kendra at a local mall. Kendra decides she wants to pick the place of the meet, tells Michael this, and disappears. Cutler and Michael meet, and Michael gives him some fentanyl. He won’t let Michael show him how to prep the drugs, as it violates his privacy. Jesse attempts to follow the car, but gets cutoff by some lookouts for Cutler. Jesse escapes, as the lookouts open fire on him. Cutler and his guys come and vandalize the clinic, and Michael convinces him to close it down temporarily. Michael “kidnaps” David, who doesn’t want to leave the clinic  and takes him to Jesse’s. Michael and Sam try to fly a remote controlled airplane over the dealer’s place, but their skills suck, so they enlist a kid to do it for them. They get the shots they need, and Michael asks Sam to get a delivery truck. Kendra calls Michael and sets up a new meet at a place of her choosing. Fi overhears Michael’s part of the talk and tells him that she wishes their chats were that “flirty.” He tells her that Kendra threatened to kill him, to which Fi tells him, “I can do that.” David tries to leave the house because the clinic is under assault. Michael and Fi go to check it out. The dealers are about to throw a Molotov cocktail at the clinic, but Fi and Michael pull some A-Team shooting (hitting everything but the villains) and scare off the dealers for the moment. Jesse and Fi decide they want to go to war, but Michael insists on keeping to the original plan. Maddy pulls Michael aside, and after telling Michael a story about him and Nate from when they were younger, and how it took Nate standing up for himself to get rid of a bully, Michael agrees to alter the plan. Michael goes to Cutler and tells him that David is a former Delta operative who just took out his team. Cutler calls a couple of his guys, whom Sam has already taken out. Michael sent David to face Cutler with Fi and Jesse hiding in the shadows to help. After some gunfire and blowing up the stash house, the dealers flee. After all this, Michael goes to meet Kendra (with Sam hiding in the back seat with a sniper rifle. Kendra met Michael out of Sam’s line of sight, setting up a one-on-one confrontation. She hands over the money, and then proceeds to attack Michael with a knife, cutting his arm. Fortunately, Michael lined his briefcase with steel, and was able to knock out his would-be assassin. Michael and Sam load her into the trunk, and the credits roll.

So once again, this episode tended to split the quartet into two teams. Once again, the teams were primarily Michael and Sam, and Fi and Jesse. Back again this week was actress Navi Rawat, who plays Kendra. I have to admit that I like her female assassin character better than Lucy Lawless’s character Evelyn from Season 1. Of course, Lucy was only in one episode, where Navi is getting a 3 episode story arc, so the character development will be better than Evelyn got. I have to admit again, that I’m ready for this Jesse story to come to an end. He’s not a bad character, but he’s not a good character either. I’m very curious to see where the Kendra storyline ends. I’m betting she’ll either die or escape. I don’t see jail being in her future. Next week we don’t get an episode of Burn Notice, so I’ll see you all again in 2 weeks, when Michael & Co. return for more adventures.
