Harold and Kumar to Spend Christmas with Machete?

Casting News, News

As principal photography begins on A Very Harold & Kumar Christmas, Warner Bros. has sent out an official press release acknowledging that the production has started. In the press release, it includes pertinent information like the confirmation of returning cast members, new cast members and a plot synopsis. It wouldn’t be Harold and Kumar without John Cho and Kal Penn, and both will be reprising their roles as the titular stoner duo. Neil Patrick Harris will be a part of the cast in some capacity, though it will be interesting to see how well he can move around (if you stayed after the credits of H&K Escape From Guantanamo Bay you know what I mean). Eddie Kaye Thomas will return as Rosenberg, but it looks like David Krumholtz won’t be appearing as Goldstein. But the best revelation of who is joining the cast is Danny Trejo. That’s right, the Mexican that nobody wants to f— with is in the new Harold & Kumar movie!

He’ll join Patton Oswalt, Thomas Lennon and these other new additions: Amir Blumenfeld (CollegeHumor.com), David Burtka (“How I Met Your Mother”), Fred Melamed (A Serious Man) and Richard Riehle (Halloween II).

Also reprising their roles are Paula Garcés as Maria; Danneel Harris as Vanessa and Bobby Lee as Kenneth Park.

Here’s a plot synopsis if you’re still in the dark about what the third madcap adventure is all about:

After years of growing apart, Harold Lee (John Cho) and Kumar Patel (Kal Penn) have replaced each other with new best friends and are preparing for their respective Christmas celebrations. But when a mysterious package arrives at Kumar’s door, his attempt to deliver it to Harold’s house ends with him inadvertently burning down Harold’s father-in-law’s prize Christmas tree. With his in-laws out of the house for less than a day, Harold decides to cover his tracks rather than come clean, and reluctantly embarks on another ill-advised but hilarious journey with Kumar, taking them through New York City on Christmas Eve in search of the perfect Christmas tree.

So besides the new cast members, the comedy will also be shot in 3-D and include a claymation sequence. A Very Harold & Kumar Christmas is slated to hit theaters sometime in 2011. Whether or not it will be a hit or a Christmas cult comedy the likes of Bad Santa, we’ll just have to wait and see. I know Escape from Guantanamo Bay was a step back compared to White Castle, but the news about Danny Trejo joining the cast – I suspect in a Christopher Meloni-type extended cameo – this is showing promise. Anybody else psyched about a third H&K movie?
