Jeff Parker Confirms The End Of Atlas, Aaron Glazer Weeps Into Pint Of Beer

News

This news was actually broken to me by Pulse Glazer, who called in an I.O.U. for me to report this (I asked him to do the same thing for me last week with Spider-Girl), but apparently Jeff Parker has confirmed the end of Atlas.

“Yeah. I could have kept it going, but the options offered were to tie the book into another crossover mini-event, I just wasn’t feeling it. I did it a couple of times already and feel we got some good stuff out of it, but I’m just not interested in doing it again, introducing the team again, all that. This 3-D Man story really turned out to be pretty great, it’s going to be a definite highwater mark. And I don’t want to follow it with something that would probably be less inspired. Because the whole reason for doing the book is to do the kinds of stories I set the book up for, and if we’re not going to do that, there’s not much point.”

I’m not sure where he got this from, but it does paint it out pretty clearly that the book has seen its end. While it’s unfortunate, Marvel has given the title numerous chances and relaunches, and even tie-ins and mini-series featuring the Avengers, the X-Men, Spider-Man, all sorts of big drawing characters. The book just didn’t catch on, which is unfortunate as I’ve never heard a bad thing about it.

Though there is a light at the end of the tunnel, as he teases an upcoming title that I believe is Fred Van Lente’s Avengers title, rumored to be the God Squad.

“The next big appearance will be Venus as a part of Hercules’ new God Squad! And you know, I am a little happy that for now, I get to write the end of the series, knowing it’s the end- which makes a difference. We really go all out with the Return of the Three Dimensional Man story, as will become clear in issue 3. And there’s a lot of fun stuff to look for throughout- like go back to issue one and see how many times Threes follow Del Garrett around. He’s been a great character to write. But at least I get to work with the team supreme of Gabe Hardman and Elizabeth Breitweiser again! We wanted to work together still.”

Sure, it’s the end of one property, but all that means is that the future is wide open. With any luck, Jeff Parker will pick up a new ongoing series with a better marketing twist that he can have the characters appear in.
