NHL News: Mikko Koivu Signs 7-Year Extension With Minnesota Wild

The captain will be staying in Minnesota for the forseeable future.

Koivu and the Wild agreed to a 7-year $47.25 million deal that will pay Koivu $6.75 million per year starting with the 2011-2012 season.

Koivu had one season left on his current contract and with the extension will stay in Minnesota for the next 8 years.

Koivu is a known as a solid all-around player who excels in the defensive zone and can also put the puck in the net. Koivu was 11th in points among centers last season and was also in the top 11 for faceoff percentage. Only one other player was also on both lists, Sidney Crosby.
