Static To Receive Ongoing Solo Series Penned By Teen Titans Writer

News

Today DC’s Source Blog confirmed something that was a long time coming, but that should have surprised no one. Static is receiving an ongoing series.

Why is this not a surprise? Well, if you’ve heard of Static, then that’s why. He was a character in DC’s Milestone imprint, and when the line folded he wound up spinning into a long running cartoon series on Kids WB that I can only imagine many readers are either familiar with, or grew up with. When it was announced he was returning to comics, and would be joining the Teen Titans, most immediately assumed that he would be getting his own ongoing series shortly after. After all, this is a character that has name value from another form of media that could be used to market the title.

Sure enough, that’s what we’ve got. In 2011 Static will be getting an ongoing series by out-going Teen Titans writer Felicia Henderson. Henderson, during her brief run on Teen Titans, did a story arc where the team went to Dakota and Static’s past was brought up, so in retrospect, that was foreshadowing her future with the character.

When asked about him, Henderson said this.

“When I met Dan DiDio, the first character we ever discussed was Static. Writing Teen Titans gave me an opportunity to play with this character a little. Now he’s getting his own book and I’m writing it! I’m a big Dwayne McDuffie’s fan, so it’s a privilege to reimagine the coming-of-age of a character he created. If not for the big bang, Static would be a regular, awkward, teenage guy trying to find himself — chasing girls, playing video games, downloading underground mixes of his favorite music. Instead, he has no time to find himself because the call of the superhero has found him. It’s a comic book writing dream for me.”
