Jeremy Renner Confirmed as Hawkeye in The Avengers Movie

Casting News, News

Joss Whedon, recently confirmed as the director for Marvel Studios’ upcoming superhero team-up film The Avengers, may have made a boo-boo on his second official day on the job. When stopped at the San Diego Comic-Con and pressed for information on the upcoming Avengers film, he officially confirmed that Jeremy Renner (The Hurt Locker) would by picking up a bow and quiver to fight alongside Captain America, Iron Man, Thor and the Hulk in the upcoming film.

Renner had long been rumored for the role — going back to red carpet talks around Oscar season where he announced he had been in discussion with Marvel. While this news may not be surprising, it does take a bit of the punch out of whatever announcement Marvel was planning to make this evening at their big studio panel.

The Buzz: While the Supernatural geek in me would have preferred Jensen Ackles in the role, I have to say Renner is a nice addition to the cast — really complimenting the caliber of actors Marvel has recruited to don leather costumes and punch each other.

There’s  been a lot of talk about the heroes who will be joining the film, but I am curious as to who the villains of the Avengers will be. With this many heroes — including a few that will need to be introduced to audiences — I can’t imagine the film utilizing a complex bad guy with a dense backstory. Instead, my money is on the Skrulls (or their Ultimate Universe counterparts, the Chitauri). Who do you want to see Renner as Hawkeye trade shots with on the big screen?
