Fandom Feedback: Do you purchase variant covers?

Columns, Top Story

I thought I’d start a fandom / reader feedback column where your responses get center stage.

So, the first topic involves variant covers.

In this tough economic climate, the big two and others are churning out variant covers likes its the 1990s all over again. And we know that this trend in a way led to the speculator boom and bust in the industry in the 1990s.

Have the companies learned anything from that time or have we, fandom, proven that variants are profitable?

I admittedly am not a variant guy… per se. :) I do pick variants when I like the cover not due to “completist” tendencies. In addition, there is a wide range of cost for variant covers depending on which store I go to or which book the cover adorns. That said, one store may have $7.99 on the same book someone else might sell at $25.00 (and that higher end price does sell).

So, do you get variants? Why or why not? How much have you spent or would you be willing to spend on the right variant?

Have at it fellow fandom!

Also, remember this 1990s gem that may just have kicked off the speculator boom almost 20 years ago?
