MLB News: Kevin Youkilis Will Undergo Season Ending Surgery

News

Youkilis will have surgery on his right thumb Friday.

Youkilis has a torn muscle in his right thumb that will require the surgery that will end his season. The Red Sox had held out hope that surgery could be avoided, but an MRI showed there was no getting around the surgery.

The thumb will be immobilized for 6 weeks after the surgery and then be reevaluated.

“It really stinks,” Youkilis said Tuesday. “[This injury] is very rare. Zero athletes have had it, at least as far as the doctors have said. It was a freak accident. I don’t know how it happened or the reason behind it. It just happened.”
