Cincinnati Reds 2B Brandon Phillips Incites Bench Clearing Brawl

Earlier today in Cincinnati in a game between the Reds and the St. Louis Cardinals, the benches cleared in the bottom of the first inning! MLB Dot Com reports that “Words of venom towards the Cardinals from Reds second baseman Brandon Phillips on Monday led to a benches-clearing incident between the two clubs Tuesday in St. Louis’ 8-4 victory.”

The words in question – “”I’d play against these guys with one leg. We have to beat these guys,” Phillips told the DDN. “I hate the Cardinals. All they do is [complain] and moan about everything, all of them. … I really hate the Cardinals. Compared to the Cardinals, I love the Chicago Cubs. Let me make this clear: I hate the Cardinals.”

Managers Dusty Baker and Tony LaRussa were the only people ejected after the seven-minute delay.
