Judd Winick To Write Superman/Batman Issue About Superman's Reaction To Batman's "Death"

News

I haven’t read Superman/Batman since #26 when they did the Sam Loeb issue, and I’ve had no desire to go back, but this issue might just pull me in. Final Crisis #6 ended with the now famous panel of Superman holding the corpse of Batman, that’s a moment etched into the minds of fans everywhere, even despite Bruce not being dead. It’s an iconic image.

And I mean, we’ve seen the Bat family picking up the pieces as well, but Winick says something that I hadn’t even thought of in his interview with Newsarama.

“We asked the Bat-group, the Superman-group, and nobody actually did the moment… or moments… where Superman is processing the death of Bruce Wayne, which seemed really intriguing to me.

So that’s what this is. It’s a very, very character-driven story where Superman, Clark Kent, is dealing with the loss of one of his closest friends and allies. And how he feels about Dick Grayson now becoming Batman. All these things get thrown into the mix.

I’m very pleased with it. It’s a wonderfully heart-wrenching story.”

That’s weird to me, I mean, Superman never on panel processes the death at any time. I get that he’s a busy guy, but this is the closest thing he has to a best friend, and he’s holding the corpse. The closest we’ve come to him dealing with the death is when Black Lantern Batman caused him to go Black Lantern Superman.

So Superman/Batman #76 is going to be a one shot story where Winick not only shows us what happened with Superman in the moments after finding the body, but, well, I’ll show you more of what Judd had to say.

“No one has done it. Including scenes that happen with Dick Grayson. I’m giving away a little bit, but there wasn’t a scene in comics that really had Dick react to Bruce’s death. We have never seen the moment he finds out. So yeah, we were kind of stunned that we never really did that. Eddie and I were thinking the same thing: How did we let that pass by?

So we have that moment now. Dick Grayson finds out Bruce Wayne is dead, and we see what he does with that. And Tim Drake.”

Well, I’m sold.
