The Nuggets sudden aggressive approach to trading Smith is reportedly linked to the decision not to renew the contract of VP of Basketball Operations Mark Warkentien.
Warkentien was the brains behind the trade that brough Smith to Denver in 2006. Smith was runner-up for the 2008-09 Sixth Man Award but regressed last year, averaging 15.4 points per game on 41.4 percent shooting.
Smith is in the last season of his contract that will pay him $6.03 million for the coming season.
