New Avatar Blu-ray/DVD to Include 16 Minutes of New Footage

Disc Announcements, News

First, Avatar hit theaters and the box office exploded. Then on home video, in time for Earth Day, we got barebones Blu-ray and DVD releases. Consumers didn’t care; they bought it and made it one of the best-selling titles of 2010, if not of all time. But that was the appetizer. James Cameron and Twentieth Century Fox want you to pony up more dough. This weekend is the theatrical re-release in 800 theaters across North America. The TV spots claim 8 1/2 minutes of new footage.

Well, I’m here to tell you that you’d be better off saving a trip to the cineplex and waiting for the upcoming special edition release coming in November. THR says the November release is actually going to double the amount of footage hitting theaters on Friday, with 16 minutes of new scenes. Those who have already made the transition to 3D televisions, you’ll have to wait until 2011 when the 3D home video release makes it to store shelves.
