Dwayne Johnson to Star in Journey to the Center of the Earth Sequel

Casting News, News, Top Story

Since the original star of Journey to the Center of the Earth, Brendan Fraser, couldn’t agree to a start date, it looks like he’s being replaced by Dwayne Johnson. The sequel is entitled Journey 2: The Mysterious Island.

Brad Peyton (Cats & Dogs: The Revenge of Kitty Galore) is set to direct the sequel, in which Josh Hutcherson (The Kids Are All Right) will reprise his role as amateur explorer Sean Anderson.

Johnson will play the boyfriend of Hutcherson’s mom, who Hutcherson is forced to bring on a trip to a mythical and monstrous island to find his missing grandfather. The script is loosely based on Jules Verne’s The Mysterious Island.

Other characters will be introduced over the next few weeks as casting continues. Production is estimated to begin in late October in North Carolina and Hawaii.

Just like the 2008 release, the sequel will be shot and released in 3D.

Up next for Johnson is Faster (opening November 24) followed by Fast Five, the fifth entry in the The Fast and the Furious franchise. It hits theaters June 11, 2011.
