WWE Plans Major Unification Bout For WrestleMania 27

News, Top Story

Although plans could change a million times before then, the plan as of Monday night was to unify all of the WWE’s major titles over the course of this coming year. There will be one world, one tag team, one midcard (Intercontinental) and one women’s title.

The Women’s Title is slated to be unified with the Diva’s Championship, which was created for the Smackdown brand in July 2008, at the upcoming Night of Champions PPV on September 19.

The current WWE Tag Team titles were first unified by Carlito & Primo Colon at WrestleMania 25. They defeated the reigning World Tag Team champions, John Morrison & The Miz, to unify those belts with their own WWE Tag Team titles, which had been created for the Smackdown brand in October 2002. The two sets of belts were consolidated into one last month on Raw.

The Intercontinental title was unified with the European title in July 2002 and the Hardcore title the following month. In October 2002 it was unified with the World Heavyweight Title and was then defunct until being reactivated in May 2003. The United States title was created for the Smackdown brand in July 2003. The old WCW version of the title had been unified with the Intercontinental title at Survivor Series 2001 by Edge.

The WWE Championship was unified with the WCW World Heavyweight Title at Vengeance 2001, when Chris Jericho won both belts to become the WWE Undisputed Champion. In September 2002, the World Heavyweight Title was created for the Raw brand after reigning champion Brock Lesnar became Smackdown-exclusive.

The idea is to do the WWE Championship/World Heavyweight Title unification match at WrestleMania 27 next year.
