Staff Picks: Fight to Watch

Trent’s Pick: Yuriorkis Gamboa vs. Orlando Salido
Sept 11 on HBO

I’m a sucker for some Yuriorkis Gamboa. When he fights, I watch. Given the lack of a fight that jumps of the page, I’ll side with the fighter that never disappoints and always goes hard in the ring. Gamboa’s ferocity alone is worth watching. Salido will show up, as most Mexican fighters do, and I can’t wait to see what happens to him when Gamboa lays his hands on him.

Corey’s Pick: Yuriorkis Gamboa vs. Orlando Salido
Sept 11 on HBO

Unfortunately, the one everybody wanted – Rafael Marquez vs. Juan Manuel Lopez – got canceled, leaving the door open for another fight to steal the show in September. And unfortunately, there’s just not much else worthy of attention this month. With no venue and no tickets sold, you have to assume at this point that Andre Ward and Andre Dirrell don’t fight in September. So here’s the next option: Yuriorkis Gamboa and Orlando Salido put on a good show in their featherweight unification match. Salido was subbed in and out on various occasions as Gamboa’s opponent, which had to irk him just a tad. He’s expected to be little more than a pushover for Gamboa, but Gamboa can get sloppy in the midst of dazzling spectators’ minds. Here’s hoping this one turns into a firefight after a couple of rounds.

Paul’s Pick: Anthony Peterson vs. Brandon Rios
Sept 11 in HBO

September won’t be a great month for boxing, but there’s one classic that seems to be flying under everyone’s radar. Anthony Peterson will be taking on Brandon “Bam Bam” Rios on the Yuriorkis Gamboa-Orlando Salido undercard, September 11th, and this is the type of fight that boxing fans are always claiming they want. We’ll have two young, hungry, talented warriors fighting it out in their prime for a crack at the WBA version of the lightweight title. Contrary to popular perception, Peterson and Rios just may be the two best lightweights in the world and, yeah, that’s taking the likes of Juan Manuel Marquez, Michael Katsidis and Humberto Soto into consideration. I can’t wait to see these two talented, twenty-something sharpshooters go to war.

Will’s Pick: Wladimir Klitschko vs. Sam Peter
Sept 11 on ESPN/Sky Sports

In what’s a fantastic month of fights this side of the Atlantic, my eye
can’t help but be drawn to Wladimir Klitschko taking on Sam Peter.
Maybe I’m a sucker for the legacy of this match, but Wladimir taking
on the last man to be competitive against him almost five years to the
day of the first fight is pretty interesting to me. Against Peter, Klitschko would finally prove his mettle by winning despite touching the canvas three times. I believe that Peter is closer to his peak form than his career nadir, with his decision to drop the excess bulk giving him back some of the explosiveness and speed that had caused Wladimir so many problems in 2005. And with David Haye off in his own little world and Alexander Povetkin in remedial lessons, this is probably the nearest we are going to get to an enjoyable heavyweight title fight in the second half of the year, so we may as well make the most of it.
