In a shock decision the World Boxing Council has voted to have the upcoming Super Six fight between WBA Champion Andre Ward and Andre Dirrell crown its new Super-Middleweight Champion. It had been widely expected (not least by Carl Froch) that the other remaining Super Six match, Carl Froch vs. Arthur Abraham, would be for the WBC Title. Not least because this would allow Showtime to save the WBA/WBC unification fight for the tournament’s final. However while the decision is inconvenient for Showtime, its hard to argue against on sporting grounds. Froch and Abraham are both coming off loses in their last fights and neither are as highly ranked by the organization as Andre Dirrell is.
One issue is the fraught negotiations to actually make the Dirrell vs. Ward fight with there still being no agreement on where the September 25th fight will take place. Indeed, is has been reported that Showtime has sent a formal letter to both fighters threatening legal action if they fail to fight each other before the end of October.
