NFL News: Detroit Lions QB Matt Stafford Out With Separated Shoulder

News

The team says he won’t need surgery, but they don’t know how long he will be out.

The Lions announced that Staffford suffered a Grade 2 shoulder separation when he was sacked by Julius Peppers in the second quarter of Sunday’s game.

Shoulder separations are grouped into 3 grades. Grade 1 is a slight tear with less than 10-20 percent of the ligament torn. A grade 2 generally has between 20-80 percent torn, and a grade 3 would be a complete separation.

The Lions aren’t saying how long Stafford might be out, but a general rule of thumb on Grade 2 separations is 3-6 weeks. With Staffords history and the positive things being said by the Lions staff, I would guess it would be on the lower end of that time table.
