Zambrano announced that he would retire when his current contract expires.

Carlos Zambrano won his ninth game of the season Wednesday, but it’s what he said after the game that got everyone’s attention.

Zambrano announced that he would retire when his contract runs out after the 2012 season.

“I told you the other day, this will be my last contract,” Zambrano said. “This will be my last contract. I won’t be playing anymore. I don’t want to play anymore. Life is short. Sometimes you miss things with your family, like very important people, like my daughter.”

Zambrano struggled earlier in the year, but is 6-0 with an ERA under 2 since rejoining the rotation in early August.

Zambrano is scheduled to make $36 million over the last two years of his current deal.
