Daniel Ponce de Leon vs. Antonio Escalante
Referee: Tony Crebs

Round 1

No rat tail for Ponce de Leon but it does appear he is starting to grow a Mexican mullet. A cautious start to what is expected to be the most competitive fight of the night. Escalante is the busier of the two and being the aggressor but Ponce de Leon is more accurate and landing more clean punches.

Ponce de Leon 10-9

Round 2

The fight is getting more interesting this round. Escalante is moving around and looking busy, but much like me at work, looking busy doesn’t mean he is busy. Ponce de Leon is landing harder counter punches this round. Escalante is moving this closer towards the brawl that he needs it to be in order to win.

Ponce de Leon 10-9

Round 3

Escalante is troubling me with his footwork. He is looking good but not using it at the right moments, therefore wasting his energy. Ponce de Leon is throwing many slow, deliberate punches but Escalante is allowing them to land. A huge right hook to the chin drops Escalante and he’s out on the canvas. Tony Crebs doesn’t even bother with a count as getting the doctor in the ring seems like a greater priority.

Daniel Ponce de Leon by KO at 2:40 of R3.

Antonio Escalante eventually gets to his stool and appears to be fine. With the win, Ponce de Leon becomes the #1 contender for the featherweight title held by Juan Manuel Lopez.

Victor Ortiz vs. Vivian Harris
Referee: Raul Caiz Sr

Vivian Harris comes out to “Not Afraid” by Eminem. How original. Victor Ortiz is next and comes out to mariachi music. There you go. Know your audience. Michael Buffer says this is a fight with Vicious Intentions. You’re better than that Buffer.

Round 1

Ortiz is standing in the center, chasing Harris while Harris circles. Ortiz pops some jabs just to show effort but little is going on in this round. The crowd is already booing. The referee is even caught saying “Let’s punch gentlemen.” Ortiz at least pretended to try.

Ortiz 10-9

Round 2

Ortiz comes out with more intent and drops Harris with a two-punch combo. 30 seconds into the round. Harris is up and says he is ok. Harris goes down again to a right hook but Harris is back up and ready to go. Harris goes down a third time with 90 seconds to go. No 3 knockdown rule. Ref says one more and I’m stopping it. Ortiz must have heard it and goes in for the kill. Harris catches Ortiz as he’s coming in with a nice right to stop the attack.

Ortiz 10-6

Round 3

Vivian Harris gets the business from his corner. Victor Ortiz comes out poised for the third. Ortiz lands a short right hook while Harris is in his guard and follows with an uppercut to an already falling Harris. Caiz waives the fight off as Harris lands flat on his stomach for the fourth knockdown of the fight.

Victor Ortiz by KO at 0:45 of R3

Ortiz gives another candid interview post-fight which is refreshing in a growing world full of cliches and political correctness. The only other thing of note from the interview is that Ortiz wants another shot at Maidana, who bested him last year.

Saul Alvarez vs. Carlos Baldomir
Referee: Jose Cobian

Carlos Baldomir comes out to some ballad that I’m proud to say I’ve never heard before. Very pretty, yet also very unidentifiable. Alvarez out to mariachi music. That’s how you do it.

Round 1

A rather uneventful first round. Alvarez is working slow in this ten-round fight. Baldomir is pacing himself and that doesn’t bode well for him against the much younger Alvarez.

Alvarez 10-9

Round 2

Baldomir looks very uninspired. Maybe it’s from not being able to make weight. Maybe it’s because he’s so greatful that Alvarez declined to take the penalty fee from Baldomir for being overweight. Alvarez is finding it easy to find Baldomir.

Alvarez 10-9

Round 3

Alvarez lands big power punches in between one-punch lunges from Baldomir.

Alvarez 10-9

Round 4

Best round of the fight. Alvarez picks it up and Baldomir is talking trash. He’s promoting the strength of this chin, all the while getting clocked on it.

Alvarez 10-9

Round 5

Baldomir is slow and old, as expected. He just doesn’t look motivated tonight. Alvarez is chopping Baldomir down. Baldomir is content with throwing one punch at a time. Alvarez is taking his time and looking like he will finish the job.

Alvarez 10-9

Round 6

Alvarez is destroying Baldomir. Heavy shots landing. Baldomir tries to come back but as he is throwing a left, Alvarez comes over the top with a straight right that drops Baldomir on his face. No count. Fight is waved off as Baldomir is showing no effort to get up or even move for that matter.

Saul Alvarez by KO at 2:58 of R6

Shane Mosley vs. Sergio Mora
Referee: Pat Russell

Shane Mosley kicks it old school by coming out to “Don’t Sweat the Technique” by Eric B & Rakim. Sergio Mora is accompanied to the ring by Ron Artest, amongst others.

Round 1

Cautious start to the fight. Mosley is landing punches and getting into a clinch. Mora is doing little besides what Mosley dictates. Mosley is patient while Mora’s only offensive attempts are jabs to the body.

Mosley 10-9

Round 2

Mosley is being the aggressor without really throwing any punches. Mosley moves, Mora retreats. Mosley throws, Mora moves back and counters occassionally. Mosley is winning the rounds but only because Mora is doing so little. The crowd is not happy with it.

Mosley 10-9

Round 3

Mosley must realize that he can do what he wants in this fight against a listless Mora. Mosley literally chases Mora across the ring. Mosley is outworking Mora.

Mosley 10-9

Round 4

Mora and Mosley get into a little exchange in the corner, with Mora leaving with a cut over his right eye. Cut was caused by an accidental headbutt. Mora is holding and clinching. Mosley is moving and punching.

Mosley 10-9

Round 5

Mora’s corner did a good job with the cut. This was supposed to a test for Mosley but with the little effort that Mora is putting forth, it’s really hard to tell if we can learn anything about Mosley from this fight. Mosley is landing little by little.

Mosley 10-9

Round 6

Mora is taunting a bit but it’s not taking Mosley off of his game, as Mora is intending. The ref is staying out of the fight, for the most part. Mora is tentative and Mosley is taking advantage of it.

Mosley 10-9

Round 7

Mora is having a better round here. Mosley is getting caught and perhaps taking a round off. Actually, that’s not fair. Mora is outworking Mosley. Landing the cleaner punches against the older fighter.

Mora 10-9

Round 8

Mosley is having difficulty getting inside against the longer Mora. Good thing for Mosley that Mora isn’t throwing much. Mosley goes after him as best he can but isn’t able to impress with a showy performance. Mosley is winning because Mora isn’t fighting back.

Mosley 10-9

Round 9

Mora’s corner is telling their man he is behind. Mosley is showing what a boxer does as Mora is doing nothing to really get into the fight. Mosley is landing good body shots while Mora backs up and throws flailing jabs.

Mosley 10-9

Round 10

Sergio Mora starts to show his skills more this round and mounts a comeback. He’s getting the best of the exchanges with Mosley. Mora’s jab is landing but it’s too late to start working the jab.

Mora 10-9

Round 11

Mora goes with more of the same from the last round. Mosley has banked enough rounds to give some away at the end. Mora should have been doing this earlier. He’s using his reach to his advantage and beating Mosley to the punch.

Mora 10-9

Round 12

Mosley comes out with more fury this round. He’s trying to finish strong and does just that by putting together crisp combinations. Mosley finishes strong and closes the show with a nice win.

Mosley 10-9

Inside Fights score: Mosley 117-111

Official score: 115-113 Mora, 116-112 Mosley, 114-114

The fight is a draw.

Shane Mosley is humble after the fight and gives credit to Sergio for being a difficult opponent. Mora says that he thinks he won the fight and gave Mosley too much respect. So much that he didn’t even want to hurt the man. Shane Mosley is even winning the post-fight interview.

This is embarrassing to both the sport of boxing and to Shane Mosley. Mosley is one of the true great men in and out of the ring in boxing and for him to have a win taken away from him is a travesty. Mora won no more than four rounds in this fight.
