MLB News: Former St. Louis Cardinal Eddie Phillips Passes Away At 79

News

79-year-old Eddie Phillips, who played for the St. Louis Cardinals in 1953, passed away on September 9 at Willow Care Center in Hannibal, Mo.

Phillips’ major league career, though short, was notable for its peculiarity. Though he played in only nine games, he scored four runs without ever having an at-bat—or a plate appearance. Nor was never used in the field—he was used entirely as a pinch runner in his brief big league stay.

That is not to say he wasn’t a solid hitter in the minor leagues—every season from 1951 to 1953, the outfielder eclipsed the .300 batting mark, with a high of .320. He played on the farm for 11 seasons, until 1960.
